Tip for faster frame rates, etc!
   

Let me start out by saying that this may only apply to some of you out there. (<i>DirectX developers</i>).

<u>My system specs:</u>

AMD Athlon 800
ASUS A7V133 Motherboard
Sound Blaster Live VALUE
Geforce 3 Ti 200 (it's 200 right? )
512MB Ram

As you can see it's not the best system and it's not the worst. It's just about in the middle I would imagine.

OK, now that that's over I can go on with my findings. I had a lot of little problems which included (<i>fast pink/black/green flickering when saving/zoning, soso framerates, and sound pops</i>). They were acceptable and disappointing at the same time.

I decided to take it upon myself and check out some of my DirectX settings via <b>DXDIAG</b>. This can be found in the control panel as well as the start->run dialog with DXDIAG as the filename. The only problem is that this application <i>might</i> be for people who installed the DirectX SDK, can't remember.

After looking through the settings I noticed that most of the DirectX components (<i>Direct3D, DirectSound, DirectShow, etc</i>) were in <b>DEBUG MODE</b>! Since I'm a developer, debug mode is neccessary.

I switched them from debug mode to <b>RETAIL MODE</b>. I then started up morrowind. The first thing I noticed was that it <b>loaded a heck of a lot quicker</b>. Then the <b>framerates immediately improved</b>! I also noticed the <b>flickering problem I had was exterminated</b>!

My problems have been solved!

Yeah I found that out a while ago when someone posted a similar thread on the Operation: Flashpoint boards. The wonderful people at MS left several things in debug mode when they released DX 8.0. DX 8.1 was shipped with everything in retail mode.

This DEBUG option is not available in the standard DX diagnostic utility. You have to download/install a special plugin to see the DEBUG options...I have had it once and can't remember how to get it. I will search MS site and report back.

AI detail distance??
   

MY FPS are pretty much okay (10-13 outside) and I can run around without much stutter so I'm pretty happy with the performance I'm getting BUT...

When NPCs are a good distance away from me...for example: if I'm standing on the lighthouse looking down at the town...their walking animations seem to drop down to like 4 or 5 or something. But my overall FPS don't change at all. And as soon as I get close enough, their animations pick up again & everything looks perfect (again, with no change in framerate). Strangest thing I've seen...anyone else seen this?

I supopse I should add my specs & settings:

P4 1.5Ghz
512 RAM
Win XP
Turtle Beach Santa Cruz
GeForce 2 Ultra 64MB (latest drivers:23.81 or whatever)

draw disctance: a little over half (maybe 60%?)
shadows: off *sniff*
AI distance: default (a little above zero, maybe 10 or so)
While tweaking, it seemed as though I could increase the AI distance without sacrificing FPS, but I decided not to mess with the defaults too much. Surely this doesn't have anything to do with it?!
