Some people told me that there was a way to get English subtitles, and that the file had a link in here somwhere, but all I can see is that Xerxes(numbers) is working on a file which will be posted later(except some auto-translated files which are about as much German as Norwegian is).
Is there a file ready, that can replace the German subtitles, or not? |

Xerxes is working on a high-quality hand-translated version. There is already a humorously mangled but usable machine-translated version here: http://hornox.bei.t-online.de/gothic2_english_text.zip.
The problem with the MT version is not that it isn't German, it's that it isn't really English. When machine translators fail to parse a sentence (i.e. most of the time) they just start sticking in some dictionary equivalent on a word-by-word basis. The syntax therefore is scrambled, but that's not that big a problem. The worse problem is idioms -- which are generally incomprehensible in translation -- and the words which have more than one gloss, the worst example in the demo being "bogen" which is apparently intended as "bow" but gets translated as "bent".
(The popular Web MT programs, by the way, are based on 80s technology and do not represent the state of the art. They need much bigger lexicons, including WAY more idioms, and some good statistical algorithms to make better guesses about the intended meaning, based on context.)
However, once you've figured out from context what these terms are supposed to mean, you can understand enough to get a lot of fun out of the demo. At least I could. All you really need is to be able to navigate the dialog trees. |

well, it works fine, good job .. but it really looks as if it has been translated using an automated translater. The composition of the sentences is still german and so on.

Yes, it has.. this is the autotranslated version - the real translation will be up as soon as Xerxes is done with it.. the autoversion is a lot better than nothing though(you badly need text - at least outside the demoground where there is no speech - only text). |

I found myself chuckling quite a bit at the auto translations. "Well Being Plant", "I must further", "Thing that goes bent around ... " .
Don't get me wrong, I am grateful that xerxes has provided this auto translator, but some of the stuff is just hilarious.

Hey, the translation may not be the best, but at least I can understand what's happening, and what I'm doing now. Still, I can't wait for the full game.

It was the same in Gothic 1. Schattenbiest sounds odd while Schattenläufer is cool.

Oh, is that what you meant.. good! Well, to make the Shadowbeast sound a lot worse than the "Schattenbiest", how about "Baumbiest"? Sounds like something out of Winnie the Pooh, even though it means treebeast(since they live in the forest and all).
