Funny.

Diablo 2:
1. developer: Blizzard, the undisputed no.1 in the business
2. primary market: North America
3. advertising: very, very much
4. coverage in mags, etc.: enormous
5. genre: action ==> mainstream
6. 3rd part of the series (incl. add-on).

Gothic:
1. some unknown company from Germany
2. the German speaking countries
3. close to nothing
4. not much
5. rpg ==> niche market
6. 1st game in series

I have to slightly correct my number. It was North America, not the USA. 90,000 units are a huge success. The only foreign game I´m sure sold more units is Serious Sam - The Second Encounter. Any other successful foreign game over there?
If you take into account that most of the hundreds of games sell less than 10,000 copies in the first 12 months then the given number in 6-7 months is simply excellent.
FYI, only approximately 5 games per year sell more than 500,000 units in the USA in one year.

well ppl remember the game Max Payne. Finnish Deverloper made it and offcorse i call it as a "unknown" shjit but still the game was sold out like hell cos many advertizes were made so i think Gothic would be sold good to when they advertize it in every place

How many units sold Max Payne? I don´t doubt it was more successful than Gothic (what makes it 2 out of at least 100 foreign games ), but was it really such a huge hit? And please remember we are comparing 6 month numbers for Gothic with yearly numbers for older games.

Final Fantasy? I´m only gonna believe this if you give me some sales numbers. Are you sure more than only a few 10,000 play this?

Of course Gothic could have been even more successful with more advertising. But to make PR you need a publisher who has the ressources to make PR. And a publisher who bought the necessary shelf space to fill the channel because customers expect to find an advertised product.

Maybe some of you have unrealistic expectations what sales numbers are possible for pc games. A rule of thumb is that you need ~100,000 sold through full prize units to reach the break even. (Of course productions with a gigantic budget (WC3) or expensive licenses (EA Sports) need more, "recycled" games need less).

actually, when i found gothic, i was just in the store looking for a good rpg fix, i saw the box, said "that looks friggin cool" and bought it, turned out i was right, although the box promised non linear gameplay with multiple endings....liars. but gothic was and still is a great game, gothic 2 will be better.

i don't know how many units of FF X were sold....but i know all the critics loved it, i know they had lots of advertisement (tv, magazine, movie ) and they had the loyal final fantasy-ers buying too. so that must be a lot....in all likelihood more than 10000

Ha, the spells would turn back at the caster when it hits the Paladins armor.
