Is magic in this game supposed to be a downer? its not very fun...with the weird targetting and casting and memorizing.

No I donīt think so
   

Following, the magic system feels kindof natural. The problem is you have to learn to spell. Or lets say it that way, the system learns your handwriting of the spell runes. You will discover as soon as you use a spell very often you wonīt have big problems to draw the runes. If you have a PDA you might be already used to this learn to write and the system learns to recognize your handwriting thing. I found it very good since it felt so natural, if there was some magic in the real world you also would need some time to master the stuff.
I really liked it but I can understand that some people have difficulties coping with it.
