Please! Help me love Wizardry 8!!!

Hello!

I started Wizardry 8 yesterday and it began pretty well!
The exploration of the monastry was pretty cool and there was some real epic fights! (wow! Lots of rats!) Very exciting first hours!!!

But then, the interest gradually went down...

Please, tell me I'm wrong! Tell me that it gets better later in the game!!!

First dissapointment:
I was about to leave the monastry and go to Arnika but I decide first to return to the lower part of the monastry to talk some more with first NPC you meet. It should have taken me just 5 minutes, But it took actually much more...
I came against some more slimes! Easy, I've gained levels!!! I will wipe them in second!!! But they all had 54 or more HP, and their hits were hard...
Why???

Why do they have to rise the level of enemies in areas you've already explored? It makes backtracking and exploration so tedious...
Why can we simply meet stronger creatures that are new creature in new areas???

Second dissapointment:
The road to Arnika... Sorry to come back again with this point but this is a real pain. The creatures are impossible to fight and I only made it through by running or by quickloading... Very fun indeed...
But this is actually a minor point as I just hope that with more levels I will cross it easily (but maybe the creature on the road will gain levels too!!!)

Third dissapointment:
This is a really weird point that I didn't saw in any forum... But maybe it's just me. Let me explain.
In a RPG, when you come to a village, it's usually time to make a break, buy some stuff and unfold a bit more of the story. Can Arnika be considered as a "RPG village"? There are shops, the story goes forth, talkative NPC, everything seems good. But one thing is very very annoying...

THERE IS A BATTLE EVERY 30 SECONDS LIKE IN A VERY DANGEROUS DUNGEON!!!

Actually there are more battles than in the monastry... Why?

This makes everything so tedious...
You try to find the Inn... Oops, battle! You want to talk again with the man in the temple... Oops, battle! Wanna buy some spell... Oops battle! Maybe I will go to the bank... Oops, battle!

And even if you can flee or use stealth, it's still so annoying... And again, enemies also gain levels... Which feels really artificial. You kill some rogues (HP 40). You level up. Next corner you meet new rogue with 133 HP...
And this tend to make each fight quite tough and very long...
The fights in the monastry where brilliantly balanced: some easy fights, a few harders and one or two epic.
After the monastry, every single fight seems like a boss fight... It's not a problem and it can even stimulating, as long as you don't have a fight every 30 seconds...

But maybe I'm totally wrong? There isn't any infinite respawn in Arnika and after two more fights, I will be able to wander freely!
And is the rest of the game like this? fight-fight-fight and fight?
I really liked the monastry, can the rest of the game be like that?

And what about the novice mode? What does it change? Less fights? Easier enemies? I tryed to switch from normal to novice during gameplay but there was no difference...

Please help me!!!!! I want to love this game!!!!!!!

Actually all three points you made are valid and we can't help you with them. It really depends on personal taste. Some people like leveling monsters, some people hate it, some people like respawning, some people quite like it.

About the Arnica road, we can only repeat - It is really the most unballanced area in the whole game. It doesn't mean you won't go through some more challenges later on. But yeah, challening is something else than unballanced and Arnica road is unballanced.

The third point is quite interesting, it never came to my mind. But yes, you are right. There are really fights in towns, possibly too much.

When you first get to Arnika, you are trying to avoid the fights if you can. As you level and gain equipment, you will find the fights easier. After a while, you start to feel that the monsters are not spawning fast enough. At least this is how it usually is for me...

Arnika is being invaded. That's why so many robots keep popping up.

First off, welcome to the boards.

Now then, I'd say the key to the whole thing is using the Wizfast utility. Combat gets pretty darn tedious, even for a fanboy like me. Wizfast makes combat far more enjoyable. Val used to have it available on her webpage.

Once a battle isn't a 20 minute proposition, all those fights won't trouble you nearly as much.

Wizardry 8 is fantastic. It's not perfect(only Gothic is perfect:), but it's a great game. I've been playing the heck out of it for the last 3 weeks and the more I play it, the more I like it. Definitely going to end up in my top 5 rpg's before I'm finished.

You are lucky that we Wizardry palyers are too mature for Wizardry vs. Gothic flame war (you must know all those Morrowind versus Gothic (2) threads in Morrowind/Gothic forums ;]]).

Hmmm.

Wiz8- 6 wins, probably approaching 1000 hours played
Gothic- never made it past the New Camp in several attempts

Shall we talk about perfection? Bring the flames!

Welcome to the boards.

Glad you're enjoying the game. If you have any questions, we've got lots of answers...and a few of them might even be correct.

@vanhitchcock

As others said, your first two dissapointments are caused by the badly balanced leveled creatures while you are low level. I would say that by the time you reach the next location after Arnika, the fights will be just right. For me, the worst part in the game was getting from the monastery past the crabs to the Arnika road.

I just remembered - I love this game
