is it hard to beat the game using mostly magic?

No...not really. As long as you get space between you and your opponent, that is!

Well, yes. For some missions. I used a good bow to make things easier.

Bows, although a ranged weapon, get more potent and powerful as your enemy gets closer. They even punch them backwards and it's possible, though difficult, to keep a single enemy back until it's dead.

so would it be better to invest in bows with spare points or invest in swords and str with spare points after investing in magic and mana?

I dunno what chapter you are in, but save skill points until you are max'd on magic circles(atleast to circle 4) and "make do" with which ever weapon you like best.......I prefer a ranged weapon, but it does'nt make much difference.

It appears as if my advice was short-lived
Though now that I've actually restarted Gothic as a Mage, I see it now.

Well, I was the best fighter in the colony, the best mage in the colony and probably the best archer in the game. You can be a pro at fighting, but at the same time you can be a mighty mage.
