Site using 99% CPU

Hi there. Has anyone else had this problem for the last week or 2?
When I have RPGDot's site open, Firefox is using 99% of my CPU, and often stops responding.
I seem to have the same problem with Internet Explorer.
I suspect it's the Guild Wars ads, but I'm not sure.
I actually had to kill and restart Firefox a few times to get far enough to Register and post this message.
I've taken RPGDot off my List of links I check daily, but I'd rather fix my problem and get it back, seeing as I like the content.
Any ideas?
Thanks.
Update: I just got closer to pinpointing the problem. I disabled Javascript in my options menu. Now the site works fine, and I don't get the Guild Wars ad, or any ad for that matter.
But I don't necessarily want to keep Javascript turned off, in case some site has a useful feature using Javascript.

Yes these adds are really getting out of hand. Firefox just gives up and IE barely manages to holdon, not to mention the loadtimes every time you hit a page with 2 big flashmovies, it slows down the whole experience of this site considerably. There are a number of things that you can do.

- Just block their addserver, 82.133.85.64 at the moment, if you have a proxy or an other way todo that.
- Goto this site for a no software solution.
- Goto this site for a piece of software that sets up a proxy on your computer. They have a list of adservers that gets maintained by all their users and its free.

hope that helps

I have no problem with the adds at all, but I can imagine that not-so-high-end systems can have problems with them.

Get adblock for firefox:

https://addons.update.mozilla.org/extensions/moreinfo.php?id=10&application=firefox

then disable all the adds that you dont want.

Thanks for the advice all! Much appreciated.

I'm now using adblock.

After trying a few times I finally got to block the ads without firefox freezing.

Now it's working fine.

It's disappointing though. I'm actually happy for websites to have ads. People have to make a living, and I understand that.

But those ads were ridiculous. I know my computer ain't exactly state of the art, but I can play Morrowind, Vampire: Bloodlines, KOTOR 2, and plenty of other games fine. But my computer's just not powerful enough to view a website about RPGs!

Unfortunately RPGDot has no control over the ads. Jolt stays out of content-related questions, but selling the ad space is their business.

For Opera users:
It seems Opera 8 works much faster with RPGDot than Opera7. Opera also has problems with the Guild Wars ad, though. Disable the plug-ins and it´s okay.

It's not the power of your computer. I have tested this with fairly state-of-the-art systems - Firefox has serious issues and IE does much better - but they all exhibit much higher CPU utilisation than I would like. Unfortunately, I can't find any hard data about problems with the Flash plugin.

Its a known Firefox bug. Some Flash ads will cause Firefox to exhibit 99% CPU under Windows XP. I think they are looking into it. For the meantime I have used AdBlock to get by this.

Any links at all Elkston? I posted on the Mozillazine support forums and just got "use AdBlock" replies, rather than any authoritative data about the problem.

Actually I think there are/was more than one 95 - 99% CPU usage problem/bug in Firefox. Some of them are solved, some are not.
If you want to study the problem in depth or even participate on it's solution :], I suggest to go to http://www.mozilla.org and search for something like

99 CPU firefox

And you will get a lot matches :].
