Microsoft Cancels Mythica

Well! A message on the official Mythica site announces that Microsoft has cancelled their Norse-flavoured MMORPG, Mythica:
Based on a careful evaluation of the competitive MMORPG landscape, Microsoft Game Studios has decided to cancel the Windows-based game “Mythica.” As a result of this effort, job eliminations within Microsoft Game Studios will take place, and up to 40 employees may be impacted.
Follow the link for more comments from Adam Waalkes, studio manager at Microsoft Game Studios. Thanks to Scout from MythicaHQ for the heads up.

Microsoft getting out of the MMoG market?

Well, they sold the Asheron franchise back to Turbine and now they cancel Mythica. Does Microsoft own and operate any MMoG's now?

This is a complete shock to those in the community. I've started a petition to try to get them to rethink their decision.

Petition: Restart Mythica

Try and get this site to put up the info on the petition alot of people would want to sign I think! I was greatly looking forward to this title myself. ZDNet's Gamespot says microsoft was afraid of other titles coming out in the same time-frame "the concurrent releases of EverQuest II, Lineage II and World of Warcraft." These people aren't too bright, of those games Everquest2 is the only 1 I believe has a chance of being a big hit (no offense meant to people looking forward to those titles)! I'm playing in the Taiwanese open-beta of Lineage 2 now, and sorry but it's really not any big deal at all. I don't believe these are the games they really needed to be concerned with... Not a smart decision at all

Game looked interesting .. I'll give it that.

But after the flop that was AC2, I can only imagine the MS is wondering if the MMORPG market is worth the trouble, since AC1 never really hit a home run either in the subscriptions market. With all the other games coming out, I guess MS decided that betting on Mythica being a hit wasn't worth the investment (and these games cost big bucks to develop, deploy, and support).

Still, with how much money MS has, even someone as pessimistic as myself has to be a little surprised they wouldn't see it through.

While I don't really follow MMO games in general - obviously Microsoft is huge, has experience, the Norse theme is interesting and the project seemed to be generating positive press - I think it must say something about the future saturation of the market.

Mythica's community is easily the best organised from my perspective as a news editor...it's a pity all that enthusiasm will be wasted.

Microsoft is best left as a rich publisher and sticking to making operating systems. I dont have much faith in MS for making games.

On the other hand, if i was Bill Gates (which i am kinda glad im not), i would make Microsoft into the biggest games developer company in the world. With 40 billion dollars to back you up, its just pathetic to see how greedy MS is after all, since all they really care about is PROFITs -- do you think that Microsoft cares about the gaming community? I dont think so...

Alright, people have been taking the calm and rational view of this news story, but someone has to be the one to do this. So, even though it isn’t really like me to do such things, here I must ‘bite the bullet’ and do it...

“Nnnnoooooooo!!!! *sobbing uncontrollably* Why? Oh gods why? *hic* It had such potential... *hic* and it died so young... *sob* First Midgard... and now this? *sob sob sob*

I've just posted a newsbit about it.

Now, I'm sure I'll get flamed to hell for saying it, but... Isn't this exactly what this genre needed, and what some of us have been wishing for a good, long while now?

Here comes the big guy, actually probably the biggest guy around, who starts working on a promising new mmorpg, which goes *boom* right before it comes out. Ideally I think everyone was thinking that it would have happened right after launch, but it happened before. /shrug

The impact of this cancelation should create some shockwaves around the mmorpg genre, and that is quite positive in my book: less games, more quality! Making an mmorpg game does not guarantee financial success no matter what, and this event just goes to prove it! Now maybe other developers will think twice before making an mmo just for the sake of making loads of money.

I'm sorry again, but if you sign a petition to bring the game back and you win, it'll actually be a loss for the genre as a whole... As painful as it is, this is a sacrifice that was needed.

I agree with you, Ekim! Better quality is far better than quantity.

Ehm... World of Warcraft is going to crush most MMORPGs, if customers are any indication. It's at least a year away (come on... we all know Blizzard), and yet I get 2-3 people asking about it every day. I can't remember the last person who asked about -any- other MMORPG coming out.

Also, someone was wondering if MS owned/operated any MMOs, and the answer is currently, no. However, True Fantasy Online is still on track for a release sometime this year, and I'm sure they'll push it bigtime (the chance for more japanese live subscribers is like a wet dream to them)

I think ost you know I don't linke MMORPGs at all, so I really don't care, but everybody here must be aware, that after the big flood of online games only a few could survive. We will surely see more caleatons and/or games being released with noone playing them. In the end we will have a solid handful of online games...
Overall I fully agree with Ekim.

I feel for the fans, but sadly, this probably was a good thing. Haven't played an enjoyable MMoG since I left EQ two years ago.

Well, that's strange. It's probably a good thing that a huge investor like MS knows enough about the past mistakes in the industry to rather cancel a game than proceed to put a 5 million dollar investement in it to make the game launch alone. Still, if there was one game that looked already well on its way to become very popular and appealing to the masses, I thought it was Mythica. Of course I did sometimes question the promises of making combat feel godlike (that only lasts for so long of course) and with the instances I felt it threw away pretty much the core of what MMORPG'ing means to me. Still, I thought when more instance-mmorpgs such as UXO, Tabula Rasa, etc were announced, I had the idea they were in a winning league.

The norse mythology does seem cursed. I felt terribly sorry when Funcom's Midgard was cancelled back then, and now I feel pretty much the same way. Even Fatherdale never made it, as far as I know.... Hehe, is it cursed or what?
