Anybody beat this game as a mage?

Was it hard? Are the special fx cool? Any armor buffs? Is it worth it or nearly impossible?

Mage is only hard at the beginning when you have few spells. Later on is much easier. I thought that the ending was easiest as mage.

That depends ... If the orcs elite get's too close to a mage ya better have trained in close-combat, which is expensive since the mage has penalties for that. I would say the Paladin is surperior because they are equipped with the best two-hander, armor, and some strong spells.

Paladin is the easiest, and the devs intended it to be that way. Gothic n00bs are supposed to play the Paladin way first.

All ways seem equally easy to me, but I agree when you say that the Paladin way is intended to be the first choice. In fact when I was playing Gothic 2 for the first time, I intended to join the mages. I found myself by accident joining the militia however and I'm someone who has played Gothic 1 before.

My view :

The mages are the most interesting path to play and the easiest too.

Reasons :

You can kill dragons easier from distance then from close in. (For me it was.)
You are very strong at end. Defeating orcs has never been easier.
Somehow felling that you are one with the god is good.
Novice quests are great.
Magic is cool by itself.

There is more but this is all i can throw out of my mind now.

I played Gothic 2 as a mage. Not having played the original Gothic nor many other RPG games, I too was reluctant to play as a mage. But I like magic and, after reading responses to similar questions on this forum, decided to go ahead. Was it hard? Again, not having any basis for comparison all I can say is that it didn't SEEM hard nor did it seem "nearly impossible". Sure, there were lots of creatures I had to avoid until my character developed, but that just made revenge against them that much sweeter. The power you have in the final chapters is pretty awesome and the special effects are cool. Forget about what you may have heard or read about the mage being difficult and go for it.

Many gamers think mages have inferior melee skills, but if you you learn correctly (especially as a novice!!) before you pass-out as a mage, the mage can easily hold his "head-above-water" in weapon combat.
