Hi, ihatespyware, always nice to see someone new round here.
As such a person, you may not be aware of 2 things
1) the RPGDot forum is basically for site discussions. The place for general RPG games discussion is the CRPG General Forum
2) I may be mistaken but I think there is a General Gothic forum, where this thread would be at home, if there is no Gothic 3 forum opened (probably if there isn't, the reason being that G3 information is quite scarse, but I am not actually following the game closely, though, since I hear they have ditched the old figthing system I would definately give it a try, something I am still reluctant to do with the previous games, though I probably will soon, with the of good or any RPG games coming out soon)

But don't worry, this is not something big, everyone can make a mistake. The thread is probably going to get moved to its rightful place, where it will be properly noted.

Back on topic, I believe that it is not really expected (except in the most favorable wishes of die-hard Gothic fans, and though there are many of them, especially round the Dot, wishes hardly would make the game appear on shelves) that the game is really going to come out this year. Even if it does, it is going to be a German release, of the beta kind, that is normal for Euro-first published games - buggy, with lack of polish (though I am not sure how did G1 and G2 releases went). The english release would have to wait for a while, if it is ever seen (as you must be aware that the Gothic 2 expansion pack has still not found a worldwide publisher).
On the other hand, if JoWood indeed are teetering on the edge of bakrucpt, any release would be pushed further back with at least several months, till PB finds a new (and hopefully better, though I would hate to see JoWood disappear, they are one of the few publishers around still willing to publishs RPGs) publisher.

Welcome to the forums, and thanks for the info!

I expect G3 to be delayed at least one time. So far none of the Gothics has made the first intended release date. My bet is late November in Germany, buggy as hell but in time for Christmas. Then in February the international versions follow.

I find another site that even allows you to pre-order G3 with releasedate November 2005. So you can already give them your money and then wait till eternity.
You can also pre-order the English G2 addon.

It a dutch site so it probably isn't very useful to you. I wouldn't take it serious, though. It way to early to pin a date on the calendar for the release. There are still so many things that can change.

yer but the good thing about pre odering is that you normaly dont pay till your order is shiped meaning if the english version isnt releasted you dont pay
but if it is then you dont have to worry about find a place that sell it before its sold out

Not sure why you expect that International English version would take 6 months for G3, since PB has mentioned this time they planning ahead for a more International version, instead of an after thought like G1 and G2.

Second is that JoWood is in serious trouble if G3 and AF2 are not Internaltional hits they are both using The Source Engine (imo) which is not cheap, they can no longer survive on German release only games followed by International release 6 months later.

Source engine...? Well, PB did not develop GIII on Source, and I haven't heard any news about them switching engines so far (but my info may be outdated).

And with the German language games market being the second-biggest games market in the world and G3 possibly a top-seller like the predecessors, JoWooD might be able to survive on German language version sales alone for quite some time (if we assume their survival depended on GIII) ^_^.

Well, that is the point - will they manage to survive by the time G3 is ready to roll into stores

"Well, PB did not develop GIII on Source"

As I mentioned this is my oppinion , since we know almost 100% AF2 is on The Source and that PB did mention, at least what I read thou they could have changed their mind, going with an outside engine.
Last I heard PB mentioned something like part of the engine would be developed at PB and part would be outside.
Which in PB's own words said would be better (more/realistic/lifelike) than HL2 facial animations and since Source has the best Facial animations right now it just stands to reason they could be/are using Source and improving on it, since nothing else I have seen or heard of has better Facial animations.

Second since JoWood is finacally straped and had to close down/let go several branches/empoyees, it would make the most of their resources possibly even get a cheaper/better price per game if 2 games were using The Source.

"German language games market being the second-biggest games market in the world"

That maybe true, I will take your word on it as I dont see how that matters since JoWood almost went out of business in the last year maybe 2 mostly depending/focusing on German language only version of their games.
Just out of couristy which language games is German second too, Asian, English or another ?

"switching engines"

So do you know what engine they are using?

PB has made their engine from scratch is what the latest info says. Even the latest info is already outdated, though.

I know which outside engine they started developing GIII on... it was chosen mainly for its landscaping abilities/little loading times. The id engines and their derivates (Source included) are known for eye candy but not for huge levels. I'm not free to tell you but info on which engine was initially used leaked some time ago, so you might just search the forums and older GIII news. PB also stated they might replace the engine with a development of their own, partially or as a whole, just as you said. Perhaps they did throw out all external code if Sem's info is the most actual one, but they definitely started out with a licensed engine.

Right now the biggest games market is the combined US/Canadian games market, but our business specialist Gorath is the one who should answer this question.

I thought that they were using an engine, used in the game Die Guilde 2 (aslo published by JoWood, not that I know this engine or game, but I remember reading it somewhere) with an imported engine (sth like Havok, in sheer general terms t.e engine) for the facial animations which are indeed rumoured to be better than Source, which, I may be mistaken, was called EmotFX or something like that. Of course, they may have swithched to Source at some point, though, I believe this highly unlikely - since I haven't heard any studio, besides the developers of the somewhat infamous Duke Nukem Waiting Forever title, license more than one engine for a title, for one thing, the price for licensing Source must be considerable, for another, besides why ditch all the work they have done on the game and an engine for another? They probably have made changes to the engine for their own purposes.
On the other hand, if they have indeed licensed Source at a later point, middevelopment term, G3 is not coming out anytime soon, I guarantee you
As for AF2, I don't claim to know how engine licencing works or who is doing the licensing or how IP right go, but I do believe that it must be usually for a number of titles (1, 2, etc) and in the case of Arcane Studios, they licensed it themselves, not JoWood, for a game that is believed to be Arx 2. They have not yet announced anything, as far as I know, and for all it is, since I have no knoledge who has the rights to Arx Fatalis titles (the developer or the publisher or for any other titles, for that matter) the publisher to an Arx Fatalis 2 may not be JoWood.
