My friend is having trouble installing DirectX 9.0b on his WinXP machine. He needs it in order to play Halo (and other games that will be coming out in the future). Whenever we try installing DirectX 9.0b, an error message pops up saying that DirectX 9.0b is not compatible with WinXP. Does anyone know how to get DirectX 9.0b to work on WinXP? Any help would be appreciated. _________________ OMG! WTF?! MONKEYS!!!!

Have you tried the microsoft website for help? They have quite a helpful forum there, so I'd give them a try. I'm running DX9 on my XP system, but I don't know what version of 9. _________________ If God said it, then that settles it!

Is that the exact wording or did it say a file had "not passed Microsoft logo testing"? _________________ Editor @ RPGDot |

Maybe he is trying to install the DirectX 9.0b for Win98 instead of the version that's intended for Win Xp? Of course.. Maybe there aren't even different versions of DirectX.. Uhm. Nevermind. _________________ Swedes visit NordicGamers for the latest game reviews in swedish! |

Go to the Microsoft Windows Update page: http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp
Have it scan for updates. If you don't have the latest DirectX version that your video card can handle, it'll pop up and let you install it directly from them. I've never had a problem installing updates from their update page. _________________ Freeeeeeedom! Thank heavens it's summer!

Your Cryptography service is either off or corrupted. This service checks to make sure drivers have passed logo testing and so on...a bit like a very fancy CRC check. This will be long-ish so bear with me.
First, check the service is running. Open Control Panel, then Administrative Tools, then Services and look down the list to make sure Cryptography is Running and Automatic. If not, change it to Automatic and reboot.
If it wasn't running, try installing DX9; if it is running, it's probably corrupt:
Click Start, Run, type cmd and hit [enter]. Then type:
net stop cryptsvc [enter]
ren %systemroot%\system32\catroot2 oldcatroot2 [enter]
net start cryptsvc [enter]
Try installing DX9 again.
If it's still not going, Click Start, Run, type cmd and hit [enter]. Then type cd %temp% and delete everything in that folder.
Try again.
At this point we're down to corrupt Windows files.
Click Start, Run, type cmd and hit [enter]. Then type:
sfc /PurgeCache [enter]
sfc /ScanNow [enter]
(capitals not required - just makes it easier to read)
This may take a while and you may need the WinXP disk to reload some files.
Try again.
If *this* fails throw the computer out the Window...or try re-registering the .dll files:
Click Start, Run, type cmd and hit [enter]. Then type:
regsvr32 Wintrust.dll [enter]
regsvr32 Initpki.dll [enter]
regsvr32 Dssenh.dll [enter]
regsvr32 Rsaenh.dll [enter]
regsvr32 Gpkcsp.dll [enter]
regsvr32 Sccbase.dll [enter]
regsvr32 Slbcsp.dll [enter]
regsvr32 Mssip32.dll [enter]
regsvr32 Cryptdlg.dll [enter]
Try again. If it still doesn't work...take up a different hobby.

Actually, a MCSA.
I've done a few certifications but never got around to tying up the MSCE. When the (easier) MCSA came out, it appealed to the lazy part of me. _________________ Editor @ RPGDot |

Thanks, I'll tell my friend. Actually Dhruin, this is for my friend, so I don't have to give up gaming. I myself have Win98. _________________ OMG! WTF?! MONKEYS!!!!

@ Dhruin
I'm curious, how long does it take to do the MCSA thing from step one? Is it something that is attainable with "book smarts" or is hands-on training expected? I've been thinking about taking a step in the IT direction for a while now and I'm not sure if I should go back to college just yet. Thanks! _________________ New to 3D? Not sure I can answer very well. I was intending to work towards a MSCE and had done a couple of the core OS exams when the MCSA came out and I'm lazy. I self-studied and did it over 12 months or so without putting too much effort in...but I work with MS networking nearly every day.
It can be done with "book smarts" (one of my teenage casual workers did the full MSCE over his Xmas holidays but he's much smarter than me) although I think the hands-on experience really helps. I'm not sure its held in much regard these days on its own because employers know people just take courses without the real-world experience. _________________ Editor @ RPGDot |
