Thief: Deadly Shadows - Review @ Jolt Online Gaming

Time to load up and shoot on over to Jolt Online Gaming and take a bead on their review of Thief: Deadly Shadows...

Put simply, Thief III, sorry, Thief: Deadly Shadows is a fantastic game in its own right and a worthy sequel that has arguably been worth the wait. It won’t be for everyone, but if you possess a little patience and are looking for some unbeatable atmosphere (at least one level deserves some kind of award for atmosphere so thick you couldn’t cut it with a knife), then it’s my pleasure to recommend it.

They give Garrett a 9.2 out of 10...

YES! Finally a review I can relate to

Short but relatively precise. I'm not that far in myself, but I'm truly enjoying this latest/last in the series.

Set difficulty to expert, play the part of the patient and thorough thief and soak up the atmosphere... lordy, but this is fine

Graphics are great - seriously don't understand the gripes of some reviews... compared to what's out now, this is in the top 10% I'd say, although I'd like to have more settings to twiddle than resolution and shadows
Sure - compared to Doom 3 and HL 2 shots it doesn't stand up, but those games are hardly fair comparison to something out right now - especially something which focuses on gameplay through atmosphere, not normal-maps... frame rate is just fine for me (2.4 with a 5900FX) - no problems at all.

Architecture looks like it could actually be used by real people, layout wise - which is a rare thing in games, and background sounds and voice acting are great. Lovely to hear guards mumbling "must'ave gotten the wrong uniform... this thing is tight..."

I'll say this, though... the pace has not been upped from the first two in the series... for those of you out there with a PS2 at your side and the attention span of a gerbil, this is probably NOT for you... anyone who enjoys an atmospheric, visually VERY compelling and game-play/story wise super-solid game, however... get the demo from FilePlanet or somewhere else, if you're undecided... but definately give it a try - screw the half-assed first short reviews out there which imo are completely off. This is not an FPS, this is not Metal Gear Solid - it's Thief. And it WORKS, mate...

In my book, this is one of the better games come out in a looong time.

Damn! I have to wait till next week(Friday, maybe) before I get it. Here in Finland, and everywhere in Europe, we always have to wait so much for games.
Localizing and...stuff, I don´t know the procedure.

I just want my Thief

I just got the game (yay!) and I'm already into mission 5/6, can't remember which one. Overall, I kinda agree with most of the reviews out there (those giving between 8.0 - 8.. Here's what I think about the game:

The good stuff
- Great atmosphere
- Engine does nice shadows
- Streamlined gameplay/controls (in a good way). Plays more like Splinter Cell now
- Interesting integration of story into the missions
- Easier to navigate around compared to the previous 2 Thiefs
- The non-city missions are as good as the previous 2 games.

The bad stuff
- Graphics engine! I don't know about you guys, but it seemed pretty ugly and sluggish to me...
- The City missions can get pretty boring, at least as far as I am now
- Smallish levels, no T2 rooftop mission from what I read in other reviews.
- SERIOUSLY lacks polish. The menu interface is a mess compared to the old steam engine look of the prequels. Some of the buttons looked like they were slapped on quickly with photoshop.
- The 'colored-area' map from Thief 2 is gone.

Overall, I'd give it a 8.6.
