I think that is a good way of summing things - Gothic 3 will be centered around 'the hero' as the other two were, and like those two, you will likely start low level and unclassed and have to work your way up. The basis of being a well rounded individual who can choose a path based on interests gives plenty of room for role playing - you just need to be careful with choices.

Indeed, you pretty much caught the basics of the entire series in just a few sentences - well written.

Indeed, but I do think (or hope) this will change when we know more about the magic system.

allot of things should remain...

but still we are talking about PB, they will make a good game with mages and warrior classes alike and the feeling and expirience we will have will be unique, all we have to do is remain optimistic and have faith and even encourage the producers, and I trully believe in them because they didn't disapointed me so far

mages, yes a very special ,,class" to be,hard at beggining but so damn overpowered at the end, though it had a few things like in g2 >>> there were about 10 total runes to make in the game if I recall ...

And in anything you do as a mage you can't forget melee, and I'm afraid and well,it's not such a bad thing after all to be a battlemage....
Let's put it this way,if you were there ,would you want to be just a mage??,or a battle mage,I sure know what I would choose
and acctually I do feel like I belong, and if could I would switch places into a fantasy world like that, the only bubu is with the computer and electronics(I think i would miss em,but hell!!! I would still do it and ...yes,I would hate to die and do the old <Sh*t I forgott to save!>)

I allways used one path for magic when beeing a mage(for g2 I mean) >> either just a summoner, and just learn summoning things(that is allot of melee ) or just fire/water,etc

I'd definetly live in the world of Gothic if I could. Like you, I would miss electronics and saving though. What a shame to meet a shadowbeast at night without saving ey? I don't think the creatures would be placed in the same spot all day like they are in Gothic, so stuff like that might just happen. In fact, I wish the world we live in today had saving/loading!

Here are a few things that simply drove me nuts when playing as a mage in Gothic2.

1. As it has already been pointed out by many others, spell power does not directly relate to the caster’s power. Instead of having a charged fireball and an uncharged fireball being two separate spells why not have their effect/power depend on the users magic, mana, or circle level. Start out as a firebolt and end up as an exploding AOE (area of effect) fireball with knockdown.

2. Spells will not strike the target when cast close to the target. Often times an enemy would be within sword-striking distance of me and would not be effected by my spells

3. Mage class was far too difficult to play and plan. It seems that the only fun I had with any of my mage characters was in the last few chapters of the game. Otherwise I was casting fireball three times and then running away to drink a potion, wash rinse repeat…

4. No resting without a bed. Neverwinter nights allowed the character to sit for 30 seconds in the field to recover their spells. Why can’t gothic use potions when absolutely necessary and “quick” no hp recovery resting to recover mana? Being so dependent on potions and beds was rather emasculating.

5. Higher-level spells were often times not much more efficient than lower-level spells. Obtaining a new level/circle was usually under-whelming. After hours of work I could cast summon skeleton just once only to have it smashed to pieces by a seeker. In order to kill the guy I have to summon about 7 goblin skeletons and then go and pound on him for a while.

6. Obtaining 300 mana is a Herculean feat. Even then, when using higher level spells beds and potions are a necessity. Obtaining 60% 1h and 130 strength is relatively simple. With this I could kill anything thrown at me, I cleared out every last damn orc surrounding the castle and pretty much anything else that wanted it.

7. Being a mage is not for the casual gamer. Since I started playing Gothic I have graduated high school, college, and managed to secure a cozy job. I am no stranger to the gothic series and I am I eagerly anticipating the 3rd installment. Playing a mage has its rewards but not really until the end of the game. Playing a game should be enjoyable and free from frustration from the onset. There should be continual rewards for any effort put forth. Only those who know the game inside and out can truly appreciate a mage character, and even then it can be frustrating. Have it be a bit more difficult, have it mandate planning and care but please not to a point where I want to start over as a fighter or insert the CH.

Sorry if there are any spelling or grammatical issues I don’t have time to check this. Let me know what you think.

It's really bothering you, isn't it?

1. I hope they change this in Gothic 3 with the "perks", so you can learn "x% more fire damage" or something like that to increase all your spells as you become stronger. After all for a fighter more strength results in doing more damage with all swords not just one.

2. Aaaargh. I have 80 mana in my current game (just arrived in Jharkendar, level 12) and I can't imagine how many times I've already wasted my mana because the enemies were too close. Some defence spells like in Enclave would really help.

3. I'm just starting my NotR mage career. I'll get back to you later.

4. I can always find a bed lying around. What also works, certainly for low level mages, is firing you mana till 0, then removing all your bonusses (rings, amulet, weapon). Now putting them back on will give you some new mana. I have 45 mana from weapon, rings and amulet. So everytime my mana is 0 I can get 45 for free.
In gothic 3 there will be a perk called something like "mana regeneration" is said in an interview.

5. Goblins are great to keep enemies busy. Good against dragons too. Summoning has become a lot more powerful in the addon. It helps a lot to summon multiple creatures to keep the enemy away from you.

6. Same as 3. In Gothic 2 without the addon, the mana needed for runes was extremely different so I can't say anything useful here.

7. I like magic. But I also hope they will change some things in G3.

That would be the best, if your mana regenerates, and u can cast spells in battle. And some mage classes, (i mean if u're a water mage, u can only learn water spells, if u're a summoner only summoning spells(or may a little black magic) fire mage only fire spells) U know what i mean? Yes i think. It is quite bad in gothics that the monsters interrupt your spellcastnig and u can't cast any in battle. Oh if they want they can make some spell interruption, but some chance to don't interrupt it. But like concentration in NWN or another way like WOW.... So they can make sth. with it.

I wasn't really following the whole disscussion, just glancing from time to time, but...

Gothic 3 will have perks (ie. feats in DnD)? While I think they're great things it all, just how well will it fit in Gothic? =\

Nobody knows I think it fits very well, because the different groups live in completely different areas and so will have other things they are good in and so are able to learn you different things and different ways of fighting. The small skills give you the opportunity to create a character you want, or to specialise in certain things, ie killing orcs.

Yes. This is true. But i have one more thing to ask. I think (or may i just hope) In the ,,camps" (well i donno may it will be city or sth like that) u can have many guild. I mean in the northern figthers, u can be a fighter and a water mage for example. And if there will be a place for the orcs, where u can join (well this is sure) there u can be a warrior and a shaman? So i thnik this can be good... But i donno any of these things. Only that, there will be an orc ,,camp", and a ,,camp" for the orcs.

I worry about these mages, because the mages weren't too good. It wasn't a big deal are u a fire mage or a water mage in gothic 1 (well, the water and firemage became one mage near the end.) And anybody could cast any spells, so there wasn't any differance between the 2 mages... The novice could cast these too, but it can only learn 4 circle. And yes in gothic 2 there isn't a problem like this because there is only one ,,magican". And if there is only one magican there isn't any differance no???? So if in gothic 3 there will be other and other mage there must be differance nooo???

It is rather hard to wave your hands around and concentrate on something like spellcasting at the same time when something twice your size is hitting you with a sword your size.

Hmm. While I can see that, say, joining one camp would give you more "free" STR bonuses (the Stews, "punching tips" etc) and another camp would give you more "free" DEX bonuses and such, those aren't really "perks" in the traditional sense of the word (as far as I understand it). Things like "+2 dmg when fighting orc" and such, however, wouldn't be in the "spirit" of Gothic. It'd also detract from the simplicity (I mean, the damage you do is weapon + STR - armor... can't get simpler than that).

We'll just have to wait and see.
