The latest <a href="http://www.bonusstage.com/art2537.html" target="_blank">preview</a> of 'The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion' comes courtesy of BonusStage:<blockquote><em>Whenever a new console arrives on the scene, there absolutely needs to be a game or two that makes some potential buyers drop their skeptical “Why do I need a new system?” guard and happily drop some cash in order to dive in and have a completely new gaming experience not seen previously. The preview said that oblivion will do away with rolls for hit or misses in combat. Ummm, I'm not so sure how I feel about that. Morrowind had it's share of problems with combat, but I don't see how moving even more toward action based real time battle is the answer. Maybe I'm being alarmist, but I play RPGs to escape the fact that my dexterity and reflexes suck. It allows me to play someone else who has the stats to be an awesome battle tank or a nimble ranger. If they don't roll for hits or misses and base it on stats, how will it work? I already can't play the nimble character in a real time RPG because I can't control my character well enough to stay outta the way of the baddie while flinging arrows (and aiming) or magic at him. So I'm kinda stuck playing the tank...but now even that may become hard for me to do.
Sigh...am I getting too old for RPGs? Here's hoping that I'm blowing this preview's comment out of proportion. |

While I expect that the combat is somewhat more action oriented, the actual interface is apparently still pretty much the same as in Morrowind. So if you were able to hit your opponents in that game, you should still be fine. What may be harder for you is that block is now a manual function, not automatic. Still, it was promised that you don't need FPS reflexes to play the game. I personally like these changes. |
