Queston: My Ranger(Archer), Thaco, +3 Elf Bow, and +2 arrows |
|
My level 10 Ranger Archer has a base THACO of 11, THACO of -3, uses a +3 Elf Bow in addition to the +2 arrows.
Do the game subtract the bonus from all 3 of my modifyers, from my enemy's AC?
Or is there a limit? |

The base limit for THACO in BG2 is -10. Modifiers can take it lower. I think Korgan in my game had something like a -18 or so.
THACO in second ed is a strange beast. You subtract their armor class, if positive, from your THACO. You add their armor class, if negative, to your THACO.
So... in other words if it's a plus you minus the plus and if it's a minus you plus the minus.
Which is why 3rd ed went 'Ooookay then.' and just had armor class go UP instead of down. A -10 in second edition is now a 30 (10 base + 10 to get to old 0 + 10 more to get to old -10). So a fighter with a +15 to hit rolls his dice and adds 15. So a 15 or higher hits. All adding, no subtracting. Makes life easier.

I love 3rd edition for two reasons (trust me there are more)
1. easier combat calculations (adding vs. subtracting)
2. THE MONK (need I say more) _________________ I came, I saw, I cast Death Wish. |

I keep meaning to try playing a monk, but I like my fighters too much I guess. _________________ Estuans interius, Ira vehementi

I also have a penchant for Human NG Clerics of Pelor taking the Healing and Sun realms.

Yes... yes, clerics are the most powerful class in 3rd ed (ha ha! our time has come scream the players the rest of the group has forced against their will to becoming the cleric in second edition). Thus halfling cleric is the most powerful race/class combo.
But humans or half elves do it best. I went to level 3 as a paladin and then switched to cleric. Extra turning, power attack, divine might, extra smiting... undead aren't too happy with Xeros' presence. _________________ Estuans interius, Ira vehementi
