For me it is a toss up between the character development and the story/world.

The games I most enjoy are those where I loose track of time "Just one more level", or "Just one more turn ... " or "Just let me finish this little quest here ..." That sense can spawn from:

1. Wanting to see if a level 6 fighter is REALLY that much tougher than a level 5 fighter ...
2. Discover what's around the next corner ...
3. Find out if Mr Mustard REALLY did it with a rope in the ball room (watch the story unwind) ...

What I value most is the pure escapism into a world where my decisions appear to make a real difference ... Where empires can rise and fall, or histories be rewritten, or even a good story gets told ... and I get to be a central part of it ... where no one REALLY gets hurt.

I love games that have a rich, involving story first and foremost.

Then I would rate the combat/gameplay as second. Usually I like a challenging tactical type combat system.

Which is why the Baldur's gate series is my all time favorite CGRP followed by the Fallout series.
