Post-game Crashing

This problem has been plaguing me since the day I got it and since it is such a great game I have been able to forgive it for a while but now I am completely stumped as to why it does this. I start up the game, it's fine. I play the game, for multiple hours, sometimes, it's fine. But the problem is after I exit the game. If i try to do anything at all, even restart my computer, it immediatly crashes. I have to do a hard shut down and its starting to worry me. This has also happened to two of my friends who have tried the game. Does any else out there experince the same problem? If so, can you help me out? I got v1.08j, if that has anything to do with it.

I'd suggest getting to 1.08k patch.

Also another suggestion, just don't exit the game

To truly debug your problem we'd need to know what OS you were running (WinXP, 2k, 98,etc) and exactly what kind of crash you are talking about. Is it a "blue screen" crash where some long address is printed on the screen and you have to reboot? Or is it a "lock up" crash where your system just freezes and the only remedy is a hard boot up.

Generally speaking, on modern windows systems the only software component (excluding the OS itself) that can bring the *entire* system down is a driver of some kind. So I'm thinking that perhaps you have buggy or marginal video or sound card drivers. Gothic runs fine but as a side effect puts them in a strange state. When you come back to your system to do regular stuff, this weird state (which was fine for Gothic) causes a crash.

So my suggestion would be the popular answer: Update your video and sound card drivers.

To answer those questions, my system does a locking crash. the system (Windows XP, btw) is just frozen and I can't do anything, even ctrl+alt+delete. I have an Nvidia (the model I am unsure of, it came with the computer) graphics card, which I am beggining to conclude is my problem, because if I start the game up but don't actually load up to the gameplay part, I can exit Gothic and everything still runs fine. But once I load the game up and get all the graphics going, is when the post game crashing happens. Does this narrow it down at all? Or am I completely wrong?

Hi.

The fact that it won't crash if you just stay in the menu screen and then exit is VERY telling. It definitely points towards a video card issue. Perhaps its related to loading textures, etc to the video card.

Anyway,

I would first try to get the latest Gothic patch as recommended. Then I would check Nvidia and get their latest video drivers.

Alright I shall try those things. But where can I get the 1.08k patch? I know that sounds dumb that I don't know but I don't. Could someone give me a link?

Scroll down to where you see "Download" and choose gothic_patch_108k.exe

All right I got the Patch, but it didn't solve the problem. Never fear, though, I downloaded a few new graphic drivers for me, and it solved the problem. Thanks, Elkston, for the tips.
