First Impression: Rockin!

This game is /very/ immersive; after playing this morning, I had to re-adjust mentally when I went outside to walk the dogs. Then I had to fight the urge to skip work.

The graphics are very pretty, and the world feels oh so real. Of course it's not perfect, but it's better than anything else to date. It was so nice to be roleplaying (I turned down a quest and 300 gold after I realized I was helping a shakedown artist) and to have such complete freedom. I spent an hour in the starting village before realizing that my character is a Wanderer: she was itching for the road, so away I went!

So far I've returned a lost heirloom, found a secret hiding place, gathered herbs, found pearls, killed one smuggler, and am seeking a gentleman bandit. You really do suck at combat when you start, though, so be careful. And magicka runs out so fast!

I defragged my disk before playing; load times are noticeable but no big deal. The interface for going through doors is wonderful.

Downsides: I've had one dump-to-desktop bug (while Water Walking from Bitter Coast into the starting village). It seems easier to get "stuck" on obstacles than it should (not permanently stuck). I had to create a test character to fine-tune video settings.

Nice job, Bethesda!

My system:
Athlon 1.33 GHz (thinking about overclocking it now
GeForce3 Ti200 (overclocked to 240/510, Ti500 speed), 28.32 drivers
512 MB PC2100 RAM
Turtle Beach Santa Cruz sound card
Windows XP Pro

Game settings:
1024x768, 2xAA
Pixel shading: on
AI Distance: middle
Clipping: max
Shadows: one bump from Off
3D Audio: max

Some choppiness in town, enough to notice without being a gameplay problem. No choppiness in the countryside.
