Maybe it will and maybe it will rise with the expansions sure to be coming. Is it geared for people who are not up for the Nobel prize in astro physics.Yeah,it is,but all mmorpgs are.You do not have to be intelligent to play any mmorpg out today. After 1 day you pretty much have its number.I choose to concentrate on having FUN and WoW gives me that.

I am consistently dumbfounded by the undeniably elitist attitudes which simply write off this game as lowest common denominator, simplistic, only good for stupid people with short attention spans, etc

I agree, and spent almost all 18 pages of the resultant thread explaining why

WoW is built on the EQlive (Diku, if you want to get specific) core. It's also the first MMORPG for a large number of it's current 1.5million (800k U.S.) players. While I don't believe WoW will have the consistently-growing longevity of EQlive, the latter game enjoyed two solid years of no real direct competition (you either liked UO or EQlive or AC1 as game concepts. The preferences of one didn't transport to preferring the other). And, WoW is built on a solid foundation, versus the bug-riddled crash-fiasco that was early EQ. In short, WoW is a more casual-friendly and easier game to get into. Even though the endgame follows the same traditional core formula, most of the casual players WoW attracted to the genre will never hit the repetitive raiding endgame anyway. They'll get bored long before that.

I don't like elitist assumptions. While Geldon and I share a home at Grimwell.com, we both come from diametrically opposed positions on the genre in general. My primary issue with his piece was his use of City of Heroes as a reference at all. This was made worse by it being his only statistical reference. His entire premise is built on the idea that since CoH has only declined since launch, and it's got a casual combat mechanic, so WoW will decline.

Nobody knows how long Blizzard can ride the wave. Fact is, they're due to launch in China later this year. That could jump their subscriptions into the 2-3 million range, handily surpassing even the genre-leading Lineage 1/2 games (which enjoy a lot of their success through non-subscription-based Internet Cafes anyway). Or, the game could flop there, causing an exodus elsewhere.

Quite likely though, the punditry will be what we usually are: wrong

People want to hate WoW because it's not the game for them. It's not the hardcore experience they wanted or the revolutionary combat system they claimed to need. It didn't interest them for very long, and rather admit that they are bored with the genre, they assume there's something wrong with the game.

I personally love it. It's the sort of game I wanted EQ, DAoC, SB, Horizons, and EQ2 to be (UO, Eve, SWG, ATITD, and Second Life are incomparable experiences). It's something that doesn't require a lot of esoteric excuse-making. I don't need to justify why I have fun in it. I don't need to convince myself I had a good time at the end of a night dominated by XP loss, corpse runs, and grinding.

It's not for everyone. No game ever is.

I wish people would understand that before they rail against a game that is for someone.

Tee hee. I would have played WoW, but I was jonesing in a bad way and EQII came out a curcial 2 weeks earlier. Still there's no denying the utterly un-MMORPG-like sales figures for this game. Of course they weren't prepared for such unprecedented popularity, so I'm inclined to be tolerant of some kinks. What I'd like to hear from people complaining that there's nothing to do in the game is how many hours they played it. It sounds like I'm reading posts that say "I put 150 hours into this game, and there's already nothing left for me to do. What a gyp!" That's a lot of hours, and yet a realistic if not conervative estimate.

I guess I'm wondering exactly how many hours of entertainment we've come to expect for our $50 + $13/month.

I agree that all these games have good and bad aspects to them. Some comments are well argued and some are opinionated. But we all know it's impossible for any of these companies to put out a perfect game that EVERYONE will like. Why? Because everyones interpretation of what a perfect game is WILL be different. These companies are in business to make money (Blizzard,Microsoft,Rare,etc...) and all have had some success in their games, so do you really think that they really care about our negative opinions on any of their games. Everyone IS entitle to their opinon and that's what forums are for, but think of it this way, ANYONE can complain. Try posting solutions and helpful suggestions to better the genre that you SUPPOSELY feel so passionately about. Even a step further, put your own gaming concept on paper, get it patented, and try getting it to some of these companies (you complain about) to look at it. For those who are REALLY serious, form your own company and bring YOUR own vision of games should be into a reality. FACT: Your complaints will have validity and carry more weight if you're ACTIVELY DOING something about it. This holds true in everyday life also.
