classes in G2 are disappointing
   

I must admit I'm pretty disappointed by the 3 classes in Gothic 2:
- dragon slayer (wtf? , how many dragons can there be),
- mage (uh oh, how interesting)
- paladin (wtf? again, what is it, a Bauldur's Gate flashback?)

no mercenaries?, no thiefs?, smugglers? anything interesting, fresh?

looks like all the unique setting and the atmosphere of the original Gothic is being taken away in the sequel. next thing you know you'll be battling the forces of evil with a sword of righteousness +5 and making saving throws.

I really liked Gothic 1 because it wasn't like the other rpgs, and was looking forward to the sequel,, oh well,

Well, seems like those aren't the only classes. According to what's been said on the JoWooD forums it's kind of a ladder system - as far as I interpreted what I read you'll start with a

monk ---> mage
militiaman ---> paladin
mercenary ---> dragon slayer.

May be wild speculation so far but we'll see about that when the game comes out. And there will be 4 dragons in the game.

I think it's too early to be disappointed... the game isn't even out yet...

Actually if you look at it, we have the same classes as Gothic I.
mage = mage (obviously)
paladin = Templar (fighter plus magic use)
dragon slayer = Mercenary or Guard (fighter)

All they've done is change the names.

Ahh...that's bad news for me. I was expecting more variety of things in the game.

I don't think this alone will dissapoint me. I'll tell you if I'm disappointed or not after I've played it for a week or so.

Don't worry! There'll be plenty of variety. For example, Mike Hoge said in the interview that "There will be different dialogs and side quests for the different classes AND not every class can learn everything" and "as a pickpocket you can play story elements unaccessible to others."

Now THAT is what I call good news! This gives the game a new level when it comes to being non-linear! The more non-linear it is, the better it is!

I think the best advice given here is to wait till the game comes out and then decide. After a few reviews you'll know if it sounds like the sort of game you enjoy playing. I certainly intend to buy it, based solely on how much I enjoyed Gothic. I only hope it's released here this time.

Classes?
   

What's all the fuzz about "classes" anyway?
Imho, the fun about gothic was (and hopefully will still be) mugging people or taking advantage of them. To decide who you help and who is your enemy. To REALLY hate someone, even if he's only a virtual person.
Classes are not so important, they are a "tool" by which you can choose your skills or possibilities in the game.
Most important is, that the world is believable (best would be if it even felt "living") - AND that the choice of possible actions is interesting and has a certain variety.

Yup, quite right. My personal preference would be 'living' and believable NPCs .

i think corwin is right. i think people are jumping the gun a little bit. from what i can gather we really don't know that much about the classes. if they work anything like the camps in the first gothic i'm sure it will all work out for the best. have a little faith in pb! maybe they will break the cycle of developers making bad sequeals to great games.

just wait until the game is out.
Then you will know all there is to know.

You know more if/ when a demo comes.

Eh, basically the same classes that were in the first Gothic with new twists and better guilds...they sound pretty interesting to me.

Those classes/guilds aren't really fresh, maybe interesting (which depends on the game world's richness and detail, since being a thief in Icewind Dale is not interesting, imo), but not fresh since they've all been used before in previous titles. Besides, I can bet my daedric armor that PB will make the classes/guilds fresh and exciting in Gothic II. Anyways, you can still be a thief/robber no matter what class/guild you choose...and from what I've heard they are redoing the pickpocket skill to make it better....so who knows, there may be a hidden thieves guild.

Different storyline, diff place, and diff situations. However, the atmosphere and setting of the game sounds interesting so far...you can choose to stay loyal to the king or join the peasants that are revolting against the kingdom.

...and you still should be. Just have a little more faith in PB to create a game even more rich and exciting than Gothic I (a hard task in itself, imo). Wait until the game/demo is released and who knows...you may be in for a pleasant surprise.

That's why I think Gothic I was such a hit. It had a rich and belivable world filled with well scripted NPCs ...that in turn made the whole gameplay so much more enjoyable. Whatever it is.....I'm still addicted to Gothic I.
