Different Combat Modes--Which One Do You Prefer?
   

Do you prefer turn-based, real time without pause, or real time with pause combat in your RPGs? Good examples of turn-based games would be Fallout, Fallout 2, the Might & Magics, and Wizardry 8. Real time games without pause would be like Diablo (though technically it's not an RPG). And real time with pause would be like Dungeon Siege, Baldur's Gate 2, Icewind Dale, and Planescape: Torment. I believe Gothic would fall underneath real time without pause (pause-n-play is to issue orders as in BG). Morrowind is also primarily real time, but has pause-n-play. Does one mode or the other detract from your enjoyment of a game? Or what makes a certain style of combat special to you? Does real time without pause essentially make a RPG an automatic "Diablo-clone"? Does turn-based make a game more tactical? And finally, do you think that developers should follow what is best for their design and game vision or do you think that they should listen to fans more, even though it may contradict their plans?

In RPGs I prefer the real-time with pause-style, like in BG2 and NWN. BG2 had a great system for setting those autopause-events.

In games demanding more strategy I prefer the full turn-based mode.

I generally prefer games that allow turn based combat. I can't imagine playing a Wizardry or Might and Magic game any other way and those series have been consistant favourites of mine for many years.

On the other hand though I also enjoyed and replayed The Elder Scrolls games and the Ultima Underworlds.

Perhaps real time is best suited to single character games while party based games naturally take on a tactical element that can only be fully developed by using some form of turn based system.

I never play a game with a turn based combat.
I just hate it, it takes all of the fun out of a game for me.

The first RPG i ever played was Secret of Mana. A RPG with a real time combat. You controld 3 caracters but the game paused if yu entered a menu to cast a spell.

I prefer the real-time with pause. It is just my favorite style of fighting, the one that makes it most exciting, IMO.

I think there is room for all types of battle systems.
Some games turn-based is best, some real-time with or without pause.
Turn based starts to get annoying when there are 15 or so people on screen.

My favorite is real-time like in Daggerfall & Morrowind

While none of them would prevent me from buying a game, I definitely prefer turn-based. My family interrupts my gaming so much that I rarely get "deep immersion" (which lends itself better to realtime) anyway.

I think that all of the styles work, depending on the type of game it is. A real-time system is probably best for first-person, one character games, and the turn based modes are probably best for parties.

Heh, I guess to answer your question, I would say: it depends

I enjoy playing all 3 styles. Somtimes i'm in a mood for one, over the other two types.

As long as the game is good, i'm not picky.

I'm with Gothmog. RT for a single character is fine if the combat system is well designed but TB or RT with pause suits party-play.

I like the strategy and interaction of a party so my preference is party-based real-time with pause.

I generally don't care much for turn based combat. I panic in battle and having my character ignore me when I click the button because it isn't my turn makes me crazy. It was selectable in M&M IX and I never once used the turn based mode, I played the whole game in real time. However, Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura also had selectable combat modes and I used the turn based mode a lot. Many of the fights in Arcanum were just too fast and too difficult for me in real time, so I think that both modes have their place.

I prefer real-time with option to pause (flexible combat modes). But keep in mind that certain games is suitable to certain combate modes. So as long as the games i play use a suitable combat modes and NOT something else that funny, i won't complain.

I like turn based, its more role playing that way. But if the games is a "hack n slash" game, then i prefer real time.
