Charms & Crystals

Is there any way to figure out what given charm does before inserting it into equipment?

And how the crystals suppose to work? I have the bag with five of them and…?

Pop it into a slot and watch for a change? I haven't played with them yet. I'll make a list when I can afford some more of them.

The crystals increase your resistances.

If I put them in it’s permanent, no taking out, so unless I’m going to save before charming and reload each time I don’t see any other way to say what particular charm does. Of course, later I have to write down this info since there is no way in hell anybody can remember. Same with crystals, it should be simple solution (like all equipment, point mouse and read).

The charms aren't documented in-game. You'll have to save and experiment, unfortunately. The larger the crystal, the better the resistance it offers. It's not a lot -- 4% for a medium crystal for example -- but it all helps.
