Freelancer:
interface MUCH better
combat action more enjoyable
manual better
easier learning curve

X2:
MUCH more freedom
MUCH better economy
more diverse ships to fly
control more than 1 ship
MUCH longer (FL is only ~30 hours long)

To oversimplify things a good deal: I'd call FL a space shooter with an afterthought of an economy, while X2 is an economic sim in space with some combat. Neither game is perfect, but I prefer X2. I prefer RPGs and strategy games to FPS action games. It really depends on what kind of game you want to play.

dte hits the nail on the head aiaen.

What do you like best, shooting? Or Trading. If you like to keep you finger on the trigger until your blisters get blisters, then stick with Freelancer and you'll get to a little trading on the side.

But if you like the idea of building up a trading fleet by application of commercial savvy.... wade into X2 and never look back. You'll also get a little shooting on the side.

Just don't expect to be able to do justice to both at the same time.

If you like one vs many high intensity combat then Freelancer is a blast. Loved it... very Wing Commander.

If you're partial to the thought of sitting on the bridge of a destroyer that is two kilometers long with a wing of fighters cruising beside you and saying "All wings prepare for hyperspace jump!" and jumping a fleet of vessels into an enemy system and unleashing plasma death in a 3d beautifully graphiced panorama of exploding ship bits then X2 could eventually be for you (it will take weeks of hardcore play to get a destroyer... but the fact remains they're there, they're usable, and they're as viscious as you could possibly imagine them being).

There are very few scripted battles in X2... lots of things will attack you, but with strong shields and a fast ship they're easy to avoid if you want to do other things besides fight. Like mine asteroids (tricky but incredibly profitable), run trade missions, or run galactic tours.
