MMORPGDot Feature: Power Gamer Generation

Ooh!! Power Gamers! One of the hottest topics of online gaming, maybe second only to the issue of death. Who are these Power Gamers? Do they really hinder the games we play, or are they actually helpful? Altre looks into it for us this week:

Do Power Gamers have a life? The sheer amount of time these individuals have to invest in a game just to achieve their egotistical goals is staggering. The simple fact of the matter is that these people don't have a life. Period. At least, not in the sense that you would think of it. The game is their life. Their Reality.

Remember that there's also a very funny comic along with Altre's articles. Every two weeks we bring it to you right here on MMORPGdot! Enjoy! Power Gamers Set the Bar for Competition in MMoG's

This elitist attitude towards power gamers is about as rediculous as a power gamers own elitist attitudes towards the casual gamer. This is yet another petty ying-yang argument about existence, and to be exact, existence in a virtual world. Why do people feel so damned threatened by diversity in play style? That's the real debate; Not this incredulous spam about why being competitive or relaxed is good or bad.

I appreciate your opinion on this matter.

I'm of the opinion that the Power Gaming community and Casual community should not be within the same games. Rather, they should have their own games/server/whatever. That was both groups can pursue both of their goals without having their experience lessened or comprimised. A game specifically designed for Power Gamers, to meet their needs. A game designed for casual players, to meet their needs. As it is, developers try to please both sides, which currently doesn't work well.

what your saying they should set up games to discriminate against those who invest more time in gameplay? lol well you may as well jump on the affirmitive action ticket while your at it.

power gamers have no life? um time is a luxury and at some point along the road that free time got earned.

I am not going to say all casual gamers are crybabys however the ones who are like that are infact the ones that need to get a life.

with your logic its like saying take all the football players that invest many extra hours in training out of the sporting events, well young one life doesnt work that way and never will

you want the levels and items in the game or in real life you got to get up off your fat ass and work for it

Except if your a power gamer, they stay on their fat asses. If you think about it, the people that put in all the extra training and the best players of football make it to the NFL; they don't play with casual football players. Casual football players play carebear football like flag or touch.

I think Roqua makes a really excellent example here. Today's MMO games are akin to having the guys in the NFL playing right beside those who play touch football on the weekend. Put in that perspective, it seems insane.

Guest > I don't mean to discriminate against Power Players. Rather, I feel that games discriminate against casual players. By a certain logic, those that have all that extra time may be so financially well off that they can do whatever they want all day. That may be, but I think that would only be a minority.
It's not so much a matter of just "getting off my fat ass and earning the levels." The simple fact of the matter is that most people will never have a huge amount of time to invest in these games. They have to work, take care of their families, etc. Every once in a while they do want to be able to log into a game and have some fun for thirty minutes. This should be allowed, but under the current - Power Gamer Centric - MMO systems, there's no way in hell a casual player can accomplish anything in that 30 minutes. This, to me, is wrong. Most people don't have oodles of time to throw at a game. Power Gamers are the minority. If MMO games want to broaden their appeal they need to recognize this and try to diversify their offerings.

powergamers and casual gamers

Funny, powergamers and casual gamers largely have already seperated themselves.

Powergamers play the massmogs we currently have, Casual gamers mostly play nothing at all (or some UO/SWG/MUD combination). The few casual gamers who play the popular games on the market are either former-powergamers with less drive or spare time, or a statistical anomaly compared the casual gamers who bought, played, and quit.

I think that this situation is entirely lamentable, because I believe that powergamers are the core of a persistent world's online community, and absolutely indespensible. (plug)

The problem isn't that there are differences between powergamers and casual gamers /played times and goals. The problem is that in almost every successful persistent game out, casual gamers are worthless to powergamers - and powergamers provide an obstacle for casual gamers.

A level 5 character is all but worthless to even a level 12 character in EQ. In the meantime a level 20 couldn't hope to camp for his own Polished Granite Tomahawk (at least while i was playing) because the powergamers are always there first - a casual gamer doesn't have the time to wait around for the right to wait around. Therefore, Everquest is populated almost exclusively with borderline obsessed powergamers. Who else would put up with it?

Altering the mechanics of the systems that perpetuate this problem is the true solution. There is no inherent reason for all the friction between the casual and hardcore in our playerbase.
