Poll Results and New Poll

The last poll looked at buying patterns for Oblivion with just on 50% heading out to buy it immediately for PC. 16.7% were waiting for reviews before buying the PC version and another 13.5% were waiting on an upgrade. Only 7.6% are waiting for the bargain bin. On the Xbox360 side, 5.2% are going to grab it first day, 0.4% after seeing reviews and 1.5% after they actually buy a 360.

Only 5.2% of respondents weren't interested at all.

Next, with high-end graphics being such an obvious feature of this year's high-profile releases, I thought we might look at the minimum level of graphics required to interest you. Hit the poll on the left.

The poll somehow denotes 2D graphics are "lower" than 3D graphics.

This is absurd, IMHO. 2D and 3D are different styles of representation, in their "modernity" absolutely equal (think of it as paintings ans sculptures). Many people ignore this fact, because they obviously only like photorealism.

Often, if not always the graphic detail is less.
Is it possible for 2D to have the same grapic detail?

I chose 3D but still play BG and earlier.
I perfer 3D because, it feels more realistic and often the scenes can be quite beautiful and surreal.

In terms of chronological order 2D is indeed "lower" than 3D.

Otherwise you are correct. I only just recently played through Might & Magic IX (I've got a huge pile of games that I haven't got around to playing yet) and can honestly say that the 3D graphics in that game was considerably worse than the 2D graphics in the previous versions.

Anyways, I've always been fond of the good old isometric point of view so I'm perfectly happy with the graphics in games like FallOut or PlaneScape: Torment.

To Infinity and beyond!

Feel free to suggest alternative wording. It's harder than you might think when you are restricted to 5 or so words but I'm open to suggestions.

Having said that, do you honestly think the average gamer doesn't think of the graphics in...say...Oblivion or Gothic 3 as more advanced than any 2D game ever made? Don't confused "more advanced" with "I like". For that matter (and with my limited understanding of graphics technology) that the techniques employed in modern 3D graphics are not technically more advanced and demanding than 2D? If they are equal in their modernity, which AAA titles are currently being made in 2D?

I personally very much like the detailed 2D backdrops in games like Baldur's Gate but not everyone sees it that way -- witness the early results that currently say >30% of respondents require 3D.

First, the mind of the "average gamer" isn't really my concern. In fact, I hate most gamers and their attitude.
Second, 3D graphics *are* more advanced. That's due to the fact that 3D sells better and hardware is optimized for 3D since Voodoo. But advancement in terms of hardware is besides the point, IMHO.
Third, I saw 2D graphics games with really great artwork, every background a detailed painting. I didn't play them, neither did I play Gothic 3 or Oblivion, so I really can't say which developer had more people and time and work spent on the graphics.

BTW, I love the fact that there are 3D games with 2D graphics. Ultima 7 and 8, for example.

Well, I'm trying to find out what our readers' think about graphics, so their attitude is the whole point, no? Again, I'm happy to change the wording if you have a suggestion.

I probably would ask for the preferred abstraction of graphical representation.

Ah, I dunno. Just wanted to make a point here.

Continuing the theme of discussing the phrasing and not the substance of your question, I don't "demand" any particular thing from a game, including attractive graphics. I value presentation quite highly, but I can survive without it if the game makes up for the deficit elsewhere.

@Hindukönig - that isn't what I want to ask. I want to know if they have a minimum graphical level, "below" which they will not accept.

I changed the question just a little.

I, err, really enjoy a round of NetHack from time to time. Bring on the ASCII games!

I also loved the cartoonish, hand-drawn artwork in the first Heroes of Might and Magic.

However, I also shop for games the same way I shop for books -- if I don't know anything about the 'author' or the 'story' the first thing that catches my eye is the 'title' and the 'cover art'.

I am just as likely to play games like Emperor of the Fading Suns or Might and Magic World of Xeen as I am to play a newer, more graphically intensive game. For me it is all about the story, how much the game involves me in it and over all fun!. Btw, I really do recommend Emperor of the Fading Suns, though I wish each turn took way less than 1 and 1/2 hours later in the game.

I thought it made plenty of sense. Graphics matter if you are playing a game with a graphical representation. How *much* they matter is the subject, and it is one that grips the industry.

For me it is variable - I'm willing to accept Spider-web graphics easily for an RPG, but for an FPS I'm more demanding, although Q3-level stuff is fine for those.

I think good 2d like BG is completely wrong. The 2d in BG is horrible... especially the characters.
