RYL: Play Risk Your Life and (no longer) Win A Million Dolla

Well, the rumors had been going around for some months but this weekend, Risk Your Life publisher Planetwide Games officially announced cancellation of their widely-reported One Million Dollar tournament. The official statement cites widespread cheating as the reason the contest was called off.

It is with regret that we announce the cancellation of the “RYL: Path of the Emperor” $1,000,000 skill-based tournament.

Over these past few months, we have spent considerable time and effort trying to develop failsafes that would negate the cheating that originally lead to the tournament’s suspension.

Unfortunately, the game developer has been unable to correct these technical issues in a way that we feel is foolproof.

As a result, the company cannot assure the fairness and equity of the tournament.

We’d like to thank the “RYL: Path of the Emperor” community for their support and understanding through this matter. This is a great community, and we hope you will continue to enjoy the game.

Best regards.

The RYL Team

I don't know the background behind this but doesn't it sound like "attract buyers by promoting $1M, then sneak off without paying out"?

Cheating definitely played a part in the decision (there are plenty of horror stories about the tournament's early days around the web), but I'm betting there are other factors as well. For one thing, I don't believe their subscriber numbers are what they'd hoped for, and million-dollar giveaways are generally frowned upon when a company's attempting to undergo a merger. Ideally they'd have $1m earmarked just for the contest at announcement time (hey it could even gain interest for them while the contest was underway!), but I doubt that's how these things ever work.

I am with the "They do not have anywhere near a million US in disposable income" group.

Not saying that I am connected to millions of people but I know of zero people subscribed to this game.

Considering how bad the game is, the thing was probably a scam the whole time, and the cheating gave them an easy way out.

Hell they might have even planted the cheaters to throw the contest.
