Back alive and reasonably well

Ok, we are back up running after we have been hacked badly on saturday. The hackers used an exploit in our forums to do as much damage as they could. And they could do a lot, as you might guess from our long downtime.

When we went down on Saturday, we weren't even able to get the box to boot. It took several hours on a virtual console and some (paid) specialists to get at least SSH to run again. After that, the folks from Jolt took over and repaired what was to repair. I still notice some glitches like being unable to reply to some postings in the forums, but hopefully we can correct this as well.

My sincere thanks go out to the folks at easyservermanagement.com - they did a lot more than they were paid for. And to the Jolt team: they really worked hard to get things up and running from the point where they were able to get into the box.

We haven't lost any information like other newssites (some lost the complete content of their forums). And we had a backup of everything not older than a week on a second box - so we could have restored everything or almost everything. Well, I am happy we are back, I am happy you are back and I am happy that the hackers will have all the fleas on their balls I wished them onto during the last 36 hours

It wasn't just here that got hacked. It looks like a concerted effort to hack several sites. Pity we can't return the favour, in an appropriate and totally legal manner of course!!

I'll echo Irf's comments, what on earth could make RPGdot.com a target? Basically, it's (mostly) a fan-based/supported site to talk about all things RPG. There's no big dollars behind this (unless the editors have been keeping secrets from us?? I suspect the big dollars are going the other way, out of their pockets, not in).

If these morons have nothing else better to do, go pick on EA Games (Oh, can I say that? Naar, probably can't... bugger my delete key doesn't seem to wanna work!).

Thanks for working hard and bringing back up the site.
Although I have been a lurker for a loooooong time, I never took a chance to thank you guys for a job that is so well done (running the site and keeping us posted on the news front).

So, again, thanks and may the force be with us all (except the haxx0rz, they have fallen to the dark side).

What causes the hackers to do any of the vandalism they like to do? Nothing. It's just vandalism. No different than the guys who do physical vadalism.
