McConnell v. FEC
Apparently, they weren't. Goodbye free political speech. You've just been regulated. _________________ Freeeeeeedom! Thank heavens it's summer!

Not sure how you make the jump from campaign finance reform to free speech. Any and all laws pertaining to campaigns are largely ignored or circumvented anyway. Seems to me this will have practically no effect on the issue it's supposed to address. _________________ =Proud Member of the Non-Flamers Guild=

I was looking for a glimmer of hope.
@dte: Do you know what's in that campaign finance reform law? Let me give you a simple example:
There are a lot of things that Hatch (one of Utah's senators) has done that I don't agree with, so, if I got together with others who disagreed with him to run some TV ads 30 days before a primary or 60 days before an election, we can't do that. It's now illegal. My right to free political speech has just been limited. And now, it's been upheld by our highest court. You might as well call it the Incumbent Protection Act.
What part of "Congress shall make no law .... abridging the freedom of speech..." do these people not understand? _________________ Freeeeeeedom! Thank heavens it's summer!

Don't you find value in plugging the soft-money loophole? While I can understand your view of the free-speech infringement, it would seem to be a rather meaningless limitation. What are the real-world odds of independent citizens not already affiliated with any particular candidate pooling their money to advertise? A major source of "under-the-table" campaign funding is stomped with little real-world impact on free speech. Sounds like a pretty good trade to me.
That said, the entire situation stinks. This court decision certainly begs for the "slippery slope" argument. Worse, (as you point out) a noble idea was corrupted and bastardized to the point where its results actually run counter to its original intention. _________________ =Proud Member of the Non-Flamers Guild=

If you find a cockroach in your taco are you just going to eat around it? No, you're going to throw it out. You'd probably go back and demand another taco. You might even sue! Hmm... sort of sounds like what just happened, but instead of the judge ruling in your favor, they said that cockroaches in your taco are good for you.
If there's a little garbage in it, then it is all garbage. The same goes for that medicare reform bill with the largest freaking entitlement that most people don't even need, but they're shoving it down our throats anyway. And now it's going to cost us an arm, a leg and half our liver to pay for it. %$#@%*@#!
What are the odds? Do you know how many special-interest groups there are? A lot. A whole freaking lot. You piss people off bad enough about something and they'll band together to stop it. Heck, the American public itself is a special interest group.
Frankly, the court had the option to throw out only parts of the law, but they didn't. They upheld the whole thing.

I think Xen is to blame for that one. My list was a bit different. But basically the ranks were spawned from a combination of Xen's and my suggestions. _________________ Freeeeeeedom! Thank heavens it's summer!
