A very impressive piece of work!
I wasn't surprised BG2 won. The only problem is that I'll probably have to play it now and I gave up on BG never to return.

Out of the top 10 I find the surprises to be Ultima Underworld and BG1 ... what are they doing there? And Darklands winding up in #40!!! I can only suppose it is that far down because it was a small release a long time ago.

As to Diablo2 - it is a very fun game, just not a CRPG

Windwalking - Good job. It was VERY informative, and cements my opinion that I wish I had more spare time so I could try BG2 - but NWN calls me, and after that I hope to get a new PC so I can play Morrowind ... I figure that aught to keep me off the streets until some time next year

IMO Ultima Underworld was/is a great game and deserves a top spot. I can't agree more about BG1 though, I never got very far in that game, I didn't like anything about it, plus it kept crashing on my puter. I never did give it a second go though.

Heh, I almost like BG1 more than BG2 because of the exploration factor involved in it. The wilderness areas really made the game for me, for I could just go off exploring if I felt like ditching the main story for a little bit. BG2 had that to some degree, but it was so densely packed with liches and vampires and dragons that it lost the "realism" of what a Forgotten Realms Toril reality would be. Still, I give the edge to BG2 simply because of the power of the story (esp. in Throne of Bhaal), the increased character interaction (romances!) and the epic scale of some of the encounters.

The Ultima Underworlds would have been in my top 10 hadn't there been so many other non-ISO candidates I liked better still . After all, they were by Looking Glass... and the other Ultimas pale in comparison IMO.

In my book the Ultima underworld games are much better than BG1 & BG2. UUW 1+2 got a thick atmosphere, and an incredible gameworld immersiveness, which ex: BG1 & BG2 is missing a lot, not only due to there 3rd person view, but also for their mostly boring areas!

Ultima Underworld was the game that got me to switch from the Amiga to a PC(eternal thanks for that after what happened to Amiga) and with the sequel remain among my favourite gaming memories(despite a few bugs in the first one). Both were wonderfully involving games.Baldurs Gate was initially interesting but became increasingly tedious and frustrating and I eventually gave it up with a sigh of relief.

Gothmog, you should still definately try Baldurs Gate 2, I didn't like BG1 initially, I had just finished Fallouts and heard that BG-series was as good. BG1 was initially a disappointment, but BG2 was great. So even if you didn't like BG1 that much, I suggest you atleast try out BG2.

Gothmog: If you didn't like BG1, BG2 will likely also not be a game for you, unless you want to be dragged through 100 gaming hours. Yes it's a lot bigger in gametime, but just as bad as BG1 in longtime appealing.
Sure you can level up your characters a few more levels, but still in the boring 2AD&D rules. The Graphics is only minmal better, due to higher resolution, but still an annoyance in many places about where the floor begins and where the wall ends.
The main story in BG2 is a drag and certainly not better than BG1. In BG2 you just chase a wanna be bad guy magician, from one boring realm to another until you after over 100 gaming hours final get to him, and kill him in seconds!
Your characters will be at maximum level around half through the game, though you can get a cheat-patch that extend the level cap.
The best about BG2 is your NPC's you pick up in your party, they got a lot of personality, and interesting stories/sidequest, and there is also possibilities for verbal romances. It's error free (almost) and a solid game! But it will certainly not hit my top 10 list with it's lack of atmosphere, character development system, interesting story, heterogeneously battles, and gameworld immersiveness!

Now hold on a minute, here... If "everybody" thinks the BG series is overrated, who voted it to the top of the list? As I've said before, I never bought BG2 because the character development of BG1 was practically nonexistent. BG2's top rating certainly isn't my fault. Someone must have bought and liked the thing, but right now the supporters are outnumbered.

Well for BG2 to get 199 pts with only 4 first place votes that means it gleaned 159 points from other votes....or about 20 people put it 3rd, or 40 people put it 7th.

From what I understand the story is epic in scope, the interplay of NPCs makes them very "real", and if it catches you, the story is very cool. I almost bought the game because of the stronghold quests .... I *Love* getting my OWN castle/tower/whatever. One of the main reasons I did not buy it is the length. I do not have that much time any more.

But lets hear from the people who actually played and voted for BG2 ... why did you like it?

Well, Gothic may be just popular here. Anyway it's a great game so it's normal it has many votes. BG2 had the first place so why don't you say that BG2 is dominating? Because it isn't!!!!!! Hm.. Maybe your right, it's strange. Gothic has many fans that by some sort of fate have come together here.

Well just go look at the Top RPGS of all time thread and see who your nemeses are... Or, just to make things easier for y'all, here are the votes for Baldur's Gate II. The number beside the person is how many points that person gave BG II (10 points is 1st, 9 2nd, and so on, with decimals representing ties with another game... 9.5 would be tie for first with another game). If the person didn't vote for BG II, there is just a blank after heir name.

Some of these people I've never heard of, but I think that's cuz the thread was started a while ago (just look at the thread if you don't believe these numbers)

BTW, the guests' posts seemed legitimate, so I included them (none of them were really that similar with each other, so I didn't think any of 'em were spamming their games... besides, the posts were done months before my "study" ).

Also, I found that taking all of the Guests' posts out, that BG II still wins, and Gothic is still in 2nd (i can post that too, if you want).
