keysets and sub-races

right. i've perused all 218 pages of the manual for two reasons. 1. wasd isn't great if you're a southpaw liek myself. does anyone know how to change the blasted (wrong handed ) keyset? i've tried going through the various .ini files and have found nothing yet. 2. i can't figure out why sub-race is left as a choice in the single player character creation screen. it does not seem to affect abilities/feats/etc... in any way. does it do anything at all?

blargh. carve another notch in my stupidity belt. it is mostly holes now. i found the change keys by opening my eyes in the contorls settings. not trying to be pedantic, but in the manual it talks about changing from opengl to directx in the display settings of the configuration utility. i did not find this. has anyone else spied it? granted i won't be playing a perceptive elf any time soon....

Subrace changes your race name so if you say "Elf" and hit subrace and type "Drow' your character sheet reads Drow. Give yourself black skin and enjoy. You get no Drow powers but style is everything?

No, subrace doesn't do a thing as far as I can tell. And the manual was pretty bad about explaining such things too. I actually got more information off the area loading screens...

Negative, the game uses DirectX for audio only.

not trying to be pedantic about this, but the manual states on page 5:

"On the Display page, you may configure the game to use OpenGL or DirectX, the resolution at which to play the game and which texture packs to use."

the game plays with a refresh of 85hz, and anyone with an nvidia card knows, openGL always defaults to 60hz because of a bug in the driver when using windows 2000 or windows XP as their operating system. which leads me to believe that a. nvidia finally fixed this bug in the latest drivers, or b. the fgame uses directx for graphics.

i remember reading lots about this game being released in one package for windows/linux/mac, but my box states no other os than windows under the system requirements. so here i sit confused. i would prefer to play in openGL as i will get better framerates with the gf3 that i have, and it only makes sense that the gfx would be done in oGL if the game is to be released on non windows platforms.

i guess i will have to install rtcw or again, or mohaa, or q3a or something to see if the refresh bug still exists...

well. q3a still suffers from the bug, but it does also appear that the game uses oGL for its graphics as the d3d logo does not appear anywhere on the screen when enabled from the advanced display properties of the video card driver.

/me shrugs and goes back to enjoying NWN
