How long does Atari have to 'sit' on the publishing rights before PB can use someone else?
Too bad they do not do direct sales; many game companies are going that way for PC games 'niche' due to the competition from more quick profit main stream (read: another boring action clone) console games and publishing cost.
"Galactic Civilizations" is an example that makes money by direct sales.
PB can make more money; word of mouth sales and Net message boards plus Demo sales the product better.
I consider most big review sites biased -for god sakes they gave Deus Ex 2 IW (a crappy dumbed down port of a sequal, horrible) something like 90% when it should have had a 50%.
Cutting out the middle man saves money and quicker to market. Gosh knows I try to tell this to companies that direct sales is the way to go for the future of PC games niche. _________________ Wo ist mein Sumpfkraut? |

True Xerxes, but you need a starting amount of money for that and most devs haven't got those large sums of money at hand.
Could somebody tell me if Atari has also the right for patches, cause if we say that all publishers are bad and all devs are good, it better not be a devs task only. In gothic 2 are even more bugs then in nr.1 a simple patch of them could do wonders.(like the animal trophy that is still in German when you look it up.) _________________ Moderator and Council Magician of the RPGDot Shadows

Precisely the point, direct sales requires very little money. It is done by word of mouth, demos, message board post, interviews in magazines, these things are mostly free.
I should know (unfortunately), I was (stuck) in sales; and it is really the best way to sell for small cost. If I could sell you a over priced vaccum cleaner called Kirby for $1000 door to door, I could sell anything. I grew up dirt poor during the mini-depression of the early 1980, no jobs out here in Hickville, not even at the Greasy Burger when I was a teenager back then.
I did make a G2Text Mod that fixed the german text about 8 months ago. It is sitting on my old computer's HD. I assumed that Raven would have been out already and made that fan made patch moot. I mailed it out to people by request, heck it even went into the US version 1.32 it was that good. _________________ Wo ist mein Sumpfkraut? |

No sense in debating that question. Even if Atari's publishing rights went obsolete some time in the future, it wouldn't happen within the next 4-5 years. And after that hardly any other publisher (or even JoWooD themselves) would care to pick them up since the game will be outdated by then; there's market for it anymore.

You have to keep in mind though that the biggest part of Stardock's revenues was being generated by non-gaming applications. Thus giving them an option to cross-finance GalCiv in the first place. And yes, it does work out for them, but it doesn't for many other indies. |

Erck?? All know Might and Magic? Many did once maybe, but not now. And to compare MM with FIFA. Erck? It's like comparing Norwegian cross-country skiers with Luxenburg's football team.... |

Psst, Xerxes... Did you make the mod for the addon, too? If so, ... ... would you like to send it to me? |

Well, for it to work on Raven, you must have both the German version G2 and Raven together. Buy the Gold Edition German.
The between HornOx old subtitle hack for G2 that is rare to find; plus go through the Raven stuff and viola, your English subtitle version. It would be alot of work.
I wish we had some proof that the English expansion would ever be released. Only thing I heard was the English translation was done back in September for Raven? or was that for Gothic 2 ?. Atari is also sitting on a few other major titles. They are just gone. No word. This is BS.
They threw thier weight behind Driv3L and on IGN.com read a silly party to impress the 'important people'; what a waste of money, the consumer is the 'important people'. If the Raven expansion was released, it would give backward sales to Gothic 2 promotion. The add-on makes the original so much better, it would get a 93% instead of 83% from that major reviewer.
Maybe someone should pull a HalfLife 2 on them for the source code and release it already.
We the community should write the sub titles; then we will have a project where people can do our own VOICES recordings and add it to the code. I bet that would work great. Screw Atari. They sold out to console games. We make it ourselves. What do we have to lose? May never get if not announced in Feburary.
Some in the company were upset with the decision about putting out Driv3L stupid console game instead of Falcon 4.0 Gold: OIR and Raven for PC. Bar info I read somewhere.
After Feburary passes with no information, and Atari can not even be decent enough to the gaming community to tell us an updated release date (Nothing!); we must do it ourselves. Then they will have nothing to sale, after we translate the game into English as a Fan made Mod for the German Raven edition. _________________ Wo ist mein Sumpfkraut? |

I asked atari about the release date on the atari forum well im not getting wiser
DarkWeaver:
When is atari going to release the gothic 2 addon?
Degs:
Who published it? Usually addons are up to the developer not Atari. If it wasn't in the agreement for the game, the developer usually doesn't put one out. So you may want to check with the developer and see where they are at and if they are doing one. Personally, I couldn't tell you, but in my experience it's always best to check with the developer first to find out information. |

The mod tools in G2 addon might allow us to change the scripts. Not sure about it, maybe others can tell? BTW, I still have HornOx's subtitles hack. If anyone wants it, I can post it on my webspace.

Well, we were not sure whether English G2 would be released until late April or early May (i.e. a month before the release date). I wouldn't be surprised (but still pissed off) that they may do the same thing this time. But, because Atari decides to "reduce its third-party distribution operations." I really don't have any faith that the addon will EVER be released.

Maybe someone from PB could secretly pull off the subtitles for G2 addon (just like last time) then we don't need to do the work. |

Worst case scenario is that we get confirmation that Atari is NOT going to distribute the Addon in English.
Then what? Can PB then look for another publisher? Or is that really a priority since they have likely already been "paid" for the Addon by Jowood/Atari.
The last official word we got from PB about the English addon was that the voice recordings were about to start on September 4th of last year. Now from this can we assume that at least the written English subtitles are available? Has the localization work been completed since then and the title has just been limbo with the publisher?
If worse comes to worse, I am not opposed to buying the German version of G2 and the Addon and then somehow convincing PB to "leak" the English subtitle file. I have no idea how I would obtain the German version in America, but I'm sure there is a way. _________________ All shall hear the words of Karras...the words of Karras |
