Now you tell me that many people would be willing to pay to be in a beta?! Sorry, but that won't happen in my lifetime. If you just hang out in the mmorpgdot forums for just a few weeks you'll mostly encounter people wanting to know where to find mmorpgs that you don't need to pay for, so I would think that charging for beta would be considered a crime in the community
Have to agree with Ekim. Anyone remember when SOE announced they would be charging for the SWG beta disks? It wasn't pretty . |

no surprise...larger publishers than Codemasters (e.g. MS) cancelled online titles...the market is not as big as companies thought...finally people understand it...I hope for more good SP RPGs again *runs way from teh amd MMOG community ducking*
The market is big. I wonder if accountants are being told different though.
Everyone of my friends that are into mmorpg's are currently after the next game to try and there are no offering$.
I think the biggest problem at the moment for the gamming industry is the management and styles of people being employed.
.
yes, the market is big, but not THAT big after all for every company running a mmorpg on their own, theres place for 4, maybe 5 big mmorpgs, thats it |

I also beleive that the market going forward cannot sustain a lot of these games at one time. I believe soon enough some more will be closing shop, however I will stop making predictions (when UOX shut down, I predicted Dragon Empires would be next.. I didn't really want to be right), although I'd like to see Atriach finally admit that there will never be a game there. Those guys have been around since the Lum the Mad days, and haven't produced squat except concept art as far as I can tell.
We might even see some of the established ones start shutting down.. Horizons should be first.. perhaps AC2 or Shadowbane next. |

Beta date announced
Our period of planning has come to an end and we have currently determined that beta will start some time in May 2003. While this is later than we had originally planned it does mean we can bring you the very best game possible.
I'd been following it for 2 years. It's pretty sad to see so much effort go to waste.
Oh well, the WoW closed stress test is rockin!

Either alot of lies or a very dumb managment crew that couldn't see any other way than to spend heaps of money to release, which funds they may not have had.
Sony must be clapping at the moment!
Ther eare enough players willing to play, they just want a good product to be available. If the market lower, that the only reason is the many years of pure boring wait for the next level mmorpg.

This is not a nice reply.
I guess I should say I have been playing games since PONG, my first system was an Intellivision, my first RPG was on an Apple IIe+. As for MMORPG's, I have played UO 2yrs, EQ 2weeks, DAoC 2yrs, AO 1week, FFXI 2 weeks
There was a golden age of gaming(for my generation, I guess) from around '87, to '99. Since then game developement seems to have become more of a formula than a form of expression, or a desire to make something really fun. The last game I played that was really fun was System Shock2. my opinion only.
If the concensus here is:
Just keep releasing more and more MMORPG's, so that my long, arduous wait between "good" ones is easier...
And even more strange:
Please release a cancelled game in it's unfinished state, so I can have somethingto play while I wait for something good.
I have a tip for you.
JUST DON'T PLAY THEM!
As a rule video games are boring. They suck you in, and then you wonder why you played them.
It took me too long to figure this out. MMORPG's are the worst of the lot.
There is nothing actually that fun to do, but since you are paying for it, you are compelled to let it suck up all your time.
So you can:
Brag
Think you're cool
Chat? with friends?
Redefine tedium.
Eat alot of shitty food and drink too much soda while you wait for your health to come back.
ETC.
Sorry I'm not intending to incense you guys, but the mentality that gamers are willing to suffer dross until the cream comes out just perpetuates the formula.
Publishers now know that they can quickly release some crappy movie tie in, or take a chance on something they may normally say no to, beacause with the right PR they have assurance that "Gamers" will buy just about anything as they wait for Doom3, and WoW, and The Sims2, etc.
So bigger publishers now know they can get away with taking 4+ years to put out a game.
Not to say that they could release them sooner. One look at Doom3 tells you why it took so long!
I have become rather jaded toward gaming, since 2001, around when the next gen consoles came out. I have nothing against consoles, but again there is another totally bizarre mentality puzzle.(Gamers who think they are superior because they have such and such system, and you don't.) Play even more into the hands of crafty PR people.
There appears to be an attempt to merge console and PC games. That is having an effect similar to inbreeding. The compromises damage the game for both sides. It doesn't make sense. I couldn't bring myself to purchase DeusEx:IW, or Thief3, becuase the conversion had brought out such unappealing qualities, I'd rather just stay away, than play them "hoping" for something good.
So if you are tired of your current MMORPG, and the one you "want" to play is years away, and the one you've been watching for 2 years just got cancelled, or the one you've been slaving away at for 2 years just got shutdown(E&b. EA shame on you!), do yourself a favor, and imagine that for every click of your mouse, and every slice of pizza you sucked down, was a sit up, or a push up. You'd be climbing Mt Rainier right now! |

.
Absolutly NO! NO f'ing way would I pay to beta test someone's software. This has got to be one the worst ideas I've heard of. I'm sorry if this is a little harsh but this kind of stuff has to stop. As computer gamers who love rpg's we are already getting screwed as it is.
So, in short NO! |

I don't believe that the concensus here is what you quoted, however I think a lot of gamers are of this opinion. I think that rpgporkster you fall into this line of thinking. Everyone is intitled to their opinion and I don't want to seem like I'm bashing on you but this kind of attitude towards games has to stop. This kind of instant gratification mentality is slowly ruining games for us.
I mean I don't fault the game companies for exploiting this to make money. Ultimatly that's what they are there for is to make money and if gamers are willing to shell out money for unfinished crap then that's what we will get.
I know the feeling of hyping a game up inside my head (swg, horizons just to name a few) only to make the mistake of buying them on released day, playing them for a couple weeks then feeling like a complete idiot for even buying them.
That was the last time I've done that and I had to really evaluate my gaming habits and thoughts. Now I will not purchase some crappy game because I've just decided "I HAVE TO HAVE THIS GAME!"
Also, the poster above me pretty much nailed it. |

I would like to express condolences to the Dragon Empires staff. I cannot imagine how awful that must feel to have ANY creative output disregarded like that.
I hope the future is brighter for you guys.
I am responsible for the "Is this username taken?" post
I thought I was logged in, oh well.
And I would also like to:
strike the Mt Rainier comment
Stress that I haven't played many games since System Shock2, so my opinion there is too limited. It can be strongly argued: How the hell else do you come across SLEEPER HITS? Such as the following:
Ico(PS2) was great, Gothic was great, Divine Divinity was great, Disgaea is great, etc.
Ico looked too cool to pass up, Gothic looked so much like DAoC, I couldn't pass it up, Divinity looked so much like UO, I couldn't pass it up, and Disgaea looked SO quirky, how could anyone pass that up!
I got lucky with my gaming choices, but I will NEVER play another MMORPG.
I have simply stopped playing anything in between what I actually WANT to play.
Saves alot of money and time that way.
OK I'm done for a while _________________ PUT THAT COFFEE DOWN!!

I'm not supprised, when you see a game being pushed back constantly the financial guys will take over at some point & write it off. What does supprise me that they gave the back-end as the reason and that shows inexperience as you would think that the server side stuff would come first and ultimately determine the viability of their plans and therefore scope of what they could achieve. |

They concentrated too much effort on the environment art side of the game and not enough effort on server technology, obviously. Look at the screenshots. |
