Would love some advise on this error message....

Hi all

Have a P4 3.0Ghz with 1GB ram and ATI X800GTO 256mb card.

Game played amzingly well on high settings for the first couple of hours - I was having a great time. However, now keep getting the screen freezing on me every couple of minutes and the following error message appearing:

VPU Recover has reset your graphics accelerator as it was no longer responding to graphics driver commands. Please tell ATI Technologies about this.

I've been waiting years for this game - and i'm now tearing my hair out not being able to play it. Unfortunately I am a "technically challenged" pc gamer, so if anyone is kind enough to offer assistance, they will have to go easy with me!!

Many thanks in advance.

There might be tons of reasons. Let me ask the most important questions first.

Is this only happening in Oblivion? Do you have any other games/GPU intensive tasks that you may run and verify that they run without problems?

The context in which I've seen the above mentioned error message most frequently was in cases of overheating. So that's why I'm asking this question.

I tend to agree with Danicek.
I've got a Nvidia 6600GT 256mb. Before buying it I had to get a larger power supply unit as recommended on the box. So I went for a 600w unit which had two built in fans on it.
I've also got a side window fan and then ofcourse an extra fan near the card. I've had no problems with either my card or the game.
NOTE If you decide to go for a bigger psu, check to make sure how many power socket things there are . I bought a new unit and forgot to check. My own unit had had two, one for power one for monitor.
The new one I bought only had the one which meant I could only plug in power , but not the monitor. Had to buy a new 17" tft screen to correct my mistake
