Do you have to join a group to play online?

I have never played on any of the online RPG sites. I like to play by myself at my own speed and be my own captain. I don't think I would like to join a group. I read the writeups on these online games and they keep mentioning groups. So my question is: do you have to join a group to play these games? I have seen some screen shots of games, and it would appear that you are stumbling over other players. That doesn't seem to appealing to me. I was looking a the screen shots of Guild Wars and the graphics look pretty neat. But, like I mentioned, I like to play alone.
Also, is there some sort of fee to play on these sites? It would seen unfair to pay additional charges for a monthly users fee if this is the case

Most MMOs aren't geared towards solo play. I hear that WOW gives a decent solo experience in a MMO.

Minions of Mirth might be more your speed though. The game has a full single-player campaign as well as it's MMO aspect.
