That has to be the AI. I haven't experienced an AI like this before. I thought I could run around and bash stuff and that didn't work 5 minutes in the game. The guards stick together and the critters take their time looking for an opportunity to strike you. If I hit too hard, then they back up and try another strategy.

For example, I was with Gorn in the focus quest and a biter (one of those raptor types) fell crossing the log bridge. He got hurt bad, but after we took out the pack, and started to heal up, that bugger ran all the way back and hit us from behind. I almost had a coronary!!! Speakers were set high and I was medding. Never occurred to me that he might actually come back from behind.

This AI is also more fair and doesn't cheat like other games. Creeatures take damage falling from cliffs and a few do die. I've played other games where they fall and all of a sudden appear right behind you and finish you off.

If there is one aspect of Gothic I love it would be the AI.

Actually they're very stupid. On that same place,if the creature misses the log by only a few inches it'll go all the way around the edge untill it reaches the wall, then it'll go back to the log and try to cross it.And people in the camps if they run they don't run away from you they just start running along the edges. So you can just wait for them at 1 place untill the reach you and kill em.The trolls are also very stupid, once you hit em you can keep hitting untill it's dead. And should it go back a few steps and come back at you,you can just start hitting again.I never got defeated by an enemy, only the firelizards are hard, they killed me 2-3 times.

Yeah, the Ai is amazing - especially if you fight against a pack of critters. They act much more realistic than in all the other RPGs i've played so far.

I agree. While not perfect (face it - we don't want to see perfect AI in a game), it is by far the best and most entertaining/challenging of any game AI I have seen.

Programmers program monsters to lose. SOmetimes they take you out while losing, but they're programmed to lose. If they were programmed to win... they would.

They would know everytime you hit the attack key and parry every attack then strike while you're recovering without fail. They would shadow you as you ran by. They would use more ranged weapons.

For a 3rd person RPG, I think Gothic's AI works fine. It's challenging enough to be interesting all the way through, yet not so hard that you don't complete the game. It's nice to see a game that balances gameplay speed with difficulty (Wiz 8 does not. Its difficulty just keeps scaling and scaling and scaling until you're fighting 20 minute battles every 3 minutes... too slow. Blah)

Haha, good point. At least Gothic's AI makes it look like *YOU* are the superior intellect in the game

I agree........the AI is very good.
I'm not sure that I agree with your analysis of the programming though.

Any one enemy can take you out at any given stage of the game. Would it be fairer to say that the AI is programmed to fight to the best of its' programmed abilities?

Try to take out a ShadowBeast as a level 3 character....
