Another IWD2 Q
   

After finishing the game we suppose to get the access to “Fist of fury” or something like that, how to get that option? I played with the patched game, is it possible that this patch cancelled that option?

Well before you launch Icewind DaleII. Use the configuration program. And there you can select the "Hear of Fury" It's near the toolbar wich you move to select the dificulty setting

I had a frustrating enough time on normal... next time, I min/max my characters instead of going for roleplay...

@Xen. Me too, but I want to see these extra powerful items?

P.S. Xen if it is no trouble for you can you explain in plain English the PnP rolling dice during combat? I thought I got it but… well I must have missed something. My fighter has 31 AC and still gets his butt whooped.

OK after the goblins wiped the floor with my party I lost interest playing that mode (Heart of Fury).

Thirty One? You must be playing with the patch that actually puts armor into the game. My fighter had somethingl ike 24 which is hella-low for level 15+

(Actually, it's low for level 8+).

PnP dice rolling goes like this in combat:

The dice is rolled, which results in a 1 (automatic miss) to 20 (automatic hit and a threat for a critical hit).

To that result an attacker adds:

Size bonus (+1 for small, 0 for medium, -1 for large, etc). Bigger things have a hard time hitting small things.

Base Attack: Comes from class... for a fighter 15 it's +15

Feat Bonus: +1 for a weapon focus is about it, if you have it. Power attack or expertise can subtract at this part though it must be made perfectly clear there is no subtracting in D&D. You're simply adding a negative.

Weapon Bonus: +1 to +5 here

Favored Enemy Bonus: If you're a ranger

Spell Bonus: All sorts of goodies here.

After all that (it's really complicated at high levels) you look at that number and compare it to the targets armor class, which is:

10 - base

+ from armor and/or shield (including magical 'pluses')

+ or - from size (+1 for small, 0 for medium, etc)

+ or - from dexterity (limited by armor)

+ from feats like dodge, mobility, or expertise

+ from spells

For Example (keeping it simple) - A level 15 dwarven fighter with a +3 axe and a weapon focus would have an attack roll of +15 + 3 + 1 = +19.

If he attacked someone with an AC of 31, he would need a 12.

You're getting hit all the time because 1) Powerful monsters attacks, especially giants and dragons, almost always outstrip armor class 2) the computer cheats and is weighted for more 20s than 1s. All games have this to some degree, and the higher the difficulty level is set the greater it becomes. 3) 20s always hit, and a 1 in 20 chance happens all the time in a computer game where you can be subjected to 10 or more attack rolls in a round.

Thank you Xen I thought it would be less counting than that, just can’t imagine what’s DM is going through during some encounters with more than two enemies .



Right before final battle (yes I used the patch and my AC was 32) my best fighter dwarf had on him:
Full plate +1, Armor bonus +9, Max Dex +1 (whatever that means)
Cloak of displacement,
Shield +2, Armor bonus +4 vs. missile weapons, saving throws Fortitude and Reflex +2
Ring of protection +3
Another ring with some acid resistance
Braces attack bonus +1, damage +2
As a weapon I had this hammer +5

My stats at the end (level 16) St 24, Dex 16, Con 20, Int14, Wiz 6, Ch 2

Heh. At high levels it's a group effort. My pen and paper campaign is now level 16, and last night in the course of one massive fight against a 700 hit point undead the attack bonuses pretty much changed every round. It got to the point where the fighter player was asking "Did anything change my attack bonus this round?"

That max dexterity +1 means that you can only use +1 of your dexterity score to your armor class while wearing full plate. So if you have a dexterity of 12 (+1 to your AC), you're getting the most out of it. If you have a dexterity of 18 (+4) you can only use +1 of it... so lighter armor might be a better idea.
