Problems with starting the demo

For those who have troubles with starting the demo, Lynn posted the following on the official Divinity forums:
quote:
It’s come to our attention that some people have problems starting up the demo of Divine Divinity after they’ve installed it. This has been isolated as a bug with the installer. To solve it, download the file divdf1.zip and unzip the executable that is in the zip file to the folder in which you installed the demo of Divine Divinity. Next run the executable instead of going through the menu, and the startup problem should be solved.

I can't get the demo to work in Direct3D with or with the "patch". I only get a black screen when pressing the test button. I was able to get the demo working with DirectDraw (which is the pre-DX8 way of doing 2D). The game plays well enough so I won't bother more with it unless there is something extra to be gained with Direct3D.

Animation of spells is in 3D.
Anyway you could try to disable 3D sound as it seems to create a conflict on some systems.

I don't think disabling 3D sound will help. My problem is when you launch the game you are prompted with a configuration screen. I'm not sure but isn't the patch supposed to skip this? Well, anyhow when I test the Direct3D settings I only get a black screen when using DirectDraw it runs a frame-rate test that looks a little buggy as I can see glimpses of the desktop. This also happens until I get to the main menu but afterwards it works fine. So I guess the problem is that the game can't detect my hardware in Direct3D.

I’m using Detonator 28.90 so maybe it’s a driver problem but I guess I can live with not seeing 3D spell effects as this is only a demo. It would have been a different matter if it was the retail version.

If anyone has experienced the same feel free to drop a line but as I said I can live with DirectDraw.

No it solves some startup problems, but you have to run the new div.exe directly not from the menu.
You should also disable the alphablending option.

Thanks for taking the time to answer my questions.

Yes, I'm launching the game with div.exe but the result is the same as using the original start.exe. The game just won't run the frame-rate test with Direct3D. I tried using some official drivers for my card with no luck.

I have a couple of other systems at home so I tried installing it on one of them and it worked fine.

It must be some kind of hardware / driver issue.

Maybe you should post it at the official forum and see if they can help.
