Can you harvest ore?

In various parts of the game you can get pickaxes and in Chap 2 you can go to some mines where you can dig at large ore clusters. Has anyone left their character on long enough and gotten ore? Or is that purely asthetic?

You could not get ore in in Gothic 1 that way, i expect it is not different now.
Ore isn't used anymore in the game as i know. But i'm just in the very early beginning of the game.

If you learn smithing, you can craft 'ore blades' which require 1 ore to manufacture

They could have a multi-tiered mining skill.

Speaking of Ore did anyone else find it strange that in the "find the ore" mission in chapter two there isn't a lump of ore in any of the caves you go into? I found that a bit odd. But I did find some random black pearl, god knows what to do with that?

I guess they were very careful to take every little bit of ore that they could.

I also found the black pearl, but I don't know what it is for. Lutero also has one for sale, I think.

Keep at least one Black Pearl handy when you enter Chap 6.

I had 5 ore, Bennet took 3. After you learn the ore weapons skill, just buy ore back from him

Ore nuggets are extremely rare in the game. So, it's not a bad idea to keep all your ore, especially if you're a merc.

Why there is (hardly) no ore in Mine Valley (at for G II)

Well, you even get explanations during the story line, especially when you do the "Find out about the ore status in the Mine Valley" [actual title has been changed! - No, i just donīt have the eng. version. ] for broke ore trader Fernando from Upper Khorinis.
And thereīre also some bits of info embedded in the reporting back to Garond, at least Lord Hagen himself, at chapterīs end:
There it is told that the magical ore resources in the valley are largely depleted (a fact, Fernando is not all too happy `bout, as you can imagine).
The only ore left (and waiting for transport) are those few crates with this sparkling around them that are secured by the paladins and their personnel.

Thereīs just one spot where you get s.th. like half way to digging ore - i guess itīs the undead infested cave at bandit Dexterīs tower and camp where you can obtain two nuggets, only not by using the spike against the ore block. But rather are they sticking to each of its sides at the wall.

Ragon, the Mage (not in G II yet, though )
