Although I've given enough scrutiny to Horizons to know I wanted to apply for beta (which I did) it wasn't until tonight (after being inspired by this thread) that I read through the entire FAQ. Wow! is all I can say. It really looks like it has strong potential to be what I've been looking for in a mmorpg.

Personally, the lack of PvP which some complain about doesn't bother me a bit. I'm a friendly adventurer who's been griefed toooo many times, argh.

What can I say, great looking graphics (almost had me thinking of Morrowind in some of those screens), wonderfully detailed skills/crafting system, as well as skill flexibility for the player, housing, huge land mass (eventually anyway.) Sounds like a blast!

Oh, and am I just blind, or do they really not have a forum up yet? I want to jump in as early as possible on this one. Anyway, I'm sure I'll be in there sooner or later. If you see a human (or elven I hope by then) female scout-type named Gaelis, that's me.

Nice, i will certainly do that. And if you see some wrinkled white-haired old wizard-guy, ask if he is Ammon777 and he will tell you "Aye! Well met!"

RATS. I just read the gamespy preview and it says in there that the game is geared more for social gamers? What the hell. I am mostly a soloer. I have my doubts about this game now. If it requires me to group just like in Everquest to get anywhere then i am NOT playing this game. Solo should be a viable option. They are stupid to ignore that fact.

EDIT -- haha, never mind, i will play the game -- i need to group more often anyway.. being a lone wolf gets kinda lonely, after a while...

Well, I was going to say that it isn't a single-player game. One of the greatest aspects of MMORPGs is your ability to work with other live players. The social aspect is a MMORPG's biggest draw.

I hear ya ammon777, i'm much the same way. I do enjoy the social interaction of mmorpgs, otherwise, as Val suggests, I'd just stick to off-line single player games.

My problem is finding a group I feel like a forging a community with,
I think that's hard to find. And i make neither a good follower, nor a good leader. What's that famous quote? Something like, "Either lead, follow, or get out of the way," so I'll just get out of the way, thank you very much. But I often group with people for particular quests.

I think most mmorpgs put an emphasis on social endeavors (understandably), but even in Dragon Empires, which is very clan oriented, they say it's still possible to forge ahead as a 'lone wolf'. Maybe join in on the occasional hunting party, that sort of thing.

In any mmorpg I play, I always hold out the guild/clan option as a 'maybe' rather than mandatory. If I can find a mature, intelligent group with acceptable ethics, then I might consider joining. Hehe, much how I am in the real world, funny how that works.

Yeah. I usually dont group because they are always talking and talking and talking while i want to be killing and exploring, not talking. Talking's boring. Adventure is fun. that's mostly why i solo, because everyone else talks too much. that sounds funny, lol.

EDIT -- but i do enjoy being with other people, its just that i am 10% socializer and 90% adventurer... now, if we were adventuring together or fighting off hordes of undead, that would be different because we would be doing what i usually do solo anyway... but one reason i enjoy MMORPGs so much is the fact that you can belong to a clan/guild that becomes like a bunch of friends that collaborate and adventure together and stuff... but what i was griping about was that they seem not to give much leeway for when a person does want to solo for a while, and cant because all the monsters can only be killed if you are in groups, lol... im not saying that is how it is but i am slightly concerned of that possibility... if you have ever played Everquest you know exactly what i am talking about...

I just wanted to mention that Horizons has found a host for Europe. So North America, Europe, and parts of Asia are now covered. I hope they’ll find an Australian publisher, since we have so many Australians on these boards.

might happen ... btw, that announcement also says that HORIZONS is slated for a Fall 2003 release... which means that beta 3 would be starting at around, say, September at the latest? Of course these mmorpgs hardly ever remain loyal to release dates anyway, so i am guessing that HORIZONS may come out winter 2003... shucks, i was hoping for a summer release...

I wonder why MMORPGs have release dates Maybe to confuse us?

By the way, next Winter season will be in 2004 . The Fall quarter starts in October and ends in December, the Winter Quarter starts in January and ends in March. So I think it would be safer to expect Horizons early next year, as you said Then again, we may be surprised....

LOL, i didnt realize that Well then i hope it comes out near October, lol. And Yes, actually i read from a source on the "inside" that there is a private joke amongst mmorpg developers about release dates, mainly that they enjoy making delays because that means they get to play more Battlefield 1942... or not... j/k of course obviously

EDIT -- actually i am rather happy that HORIZONS wont be up till later this year because that gives me plenty of time to play SWG and Planetside.. not like i am lacking time though, i have 24 hours free 7 days a week.. lucky me...

Talk talk talk talk talk talk talk...

You all say "I'm playing this game reguardless" Sure this game is awsome now...becuase it hasn't released. Wait until the release then talk. Wait until it is launched with a trillion bugs...patched a hundred time...the greifers who want PvP get their way and the game is no longer the one you read about. Wait until your paying $15 a month with this "dues" for your guild....now are your parents going to pay $30 a month, and listen to you yell at the screen because of more bugs that came from the last patch. Look at UO not even the game it was in 1995. Tottally different. Look at EQ so many programs out there that a newbie doesn't stand a chance. WWII Online...terrible launch...tough to come back from ain't it. Only one stands out as a great launch...patches that enhance gameplay but the way the game is played hasn't changed at all. No cheat programs available. No "dues" and a PvP system that keeps those interested happy....DAoC. Games like Horizons and DarkFall and Dragon Empires are interesting because we havn't had to suffer with them yet...Will you still play after crashes and greifer and changes to the game that you don't like? Have fun...

Would have to disagree with you there. Yes , DAOC did have a fairly stable launch, but it's beginning to go downhill fast and people are leaving in droves now that a new MMROPG is available ( ie . ShadowBane).

In general it's patches have not enhanced the game , and it's more out of balance than it ever was. RvR is very stale with no real variety to it .... and has had no new content in this respect ever.

"Wait until your paying $15 a month with this 'dues' for your guild....now are your parents going to pay $30 a month"

Then go play a single-player game. If all you see is a glass half empty, then that's your problem. Dont come around this thread and start your BS trolling negative attitudes. The guild dues are money in-game, in case you dont know. And my parents dont pay for anything i have, i pay for it myself. I have a lot of fun with these mmorpg games and they are not nearly as bad as you two would like us to believe. I've played all of them and know that they are slowly evolving into great games. It just takes a long time for developers to grasp a decent system that minimizes griefers and maximizes the fun factor. This thread was for our guild and not for some guys to come here and try to discourage us from playing these games. Take a hike.

lol

Name one game where pvpers would have gotten their "way". There is non. Its always the carebears who are listened and pvp that gets the axe.

Calm down, Ammon. Your first post in this thread was...

"umm Excuse me, i have a question. What does Horizons have that is better than Star Wars Galaxies? I mean, i have done some research on Horizons; i dont know everything about it, but i do know enough to state fairly that Star Wars Galaxies is a better game. "

They're as entitled to their opinion as you are/were .
