Congrats on the new job Angie! We used to have Woolworths over here is the US too, but they're all gone now.

Shai_aus gave me an interesting thought: Can you change the class of a recruited NPC? This could open up some interesting possibilities in my mind. Since I'm not currently running a party with NPCs, I'll leave this as an exercise for someone else to answer.

That's a tough question. We've had a few threads in the past arguing that one out. If I remember them correctly, a short summary would be:
1) Robot- good combat, and will go everywhere
2) Vi- good combat, adds most to the storyline
3) Saxx or Madras- adds the interesting-to-play bard or gadg classes

Depends on what you need to balance out your party. I'm not using NPCs now, so this is hypothetical, but here it goes anyway: My current party lacks a ranger, so I could use Sparkle for her scouting. I lack a bard, so Saxx could fill in. I have a valkyrie, and I don't need Vi for the storyline, so not her. I never liked RFS-81, although many other disagree. Basically, it's a matter of personal taste. I could always use an extra fighter or spellcaster, regardless. And remember, that they're almost always weaker than your party in any event.

It is hard to say. We had here one poll about it (who is your favourite RPC?), but very few people voted. So there are only 7 votes. Most of them for Vi (3) and then for none (2).
I personaly voted for none, because I always play this game only with 6 characters and without RPC.

Yes, I also did, but I found it to be funniest and most satisfiing with 6 partymembers.

I kinda missed this point on the first read- thought it deserved extra emphasis, particularly since it supports my anti-RPC attitude...

Note that I said that there were "very few" NPCs worth recruiting, as opposed to "none". Vi is very good, despite the fact that she wont go to Bayjin or the Rapax Rift.

The other one worth having around, in my humble opinion, is RFS-81, the android monk. His inability to cast spells is more than made up for by his funky android immunities. What's more, he will go with you almost anywhere in the game, including the Rapax Rift.

Almost, that is. Funnily enough, even though he doesn't have any problems going in the Rapax Castle stronghold, he doesn't like the Wilderness Clearing Rapax Camp.

But apart from that, he takes my vote as best RPC. Get him early on in the game, and he'll be unstoppable later on.

Yes RFS-81 is one of best RPCs. I had him in my party for several moments, Vi for several hours and Miles also for several hours until he died and I didnt resurect him...

One more thought.

The main reason why RPCs are difficult to make successful is that, by the time you get around to recruiting them, your whole party might be several levels above them, instantly making them the weakest characters in your party, and they usually stay that way indefinately. In one of my Wizardry 8 games, I decided that I needed a ranger. My party was about level 14, and found Pvt. Sparkle while doing Umpani stuff. I saved, recruited her, looked at her info screen. When I saw that she was level 8, I said "pfft" and reloaded.

This is a problem in many RPGs. In BG2, for example, you could spend Chapter 3 doing all of the optional quests, raising the level of your characters to about 13 or 14 before you were forced to continue. So you continue the plot, go to the Asylum, and find Imoen, and she's about level 10, as I remember. So, for the rest of the game, she can't ever reach her full power.

I don't know why developers couldn't just fix this so that unrecruited NPCs could grow in power and experience as your party does. It'd make me a lot more open to recruiting RPCs.

It seems to be good idea. Also monsters are leveling up with your growing strenghts, so why RPCs shouldnt do same thing?

I agree that the NPC's got too low a level when you reach them, when playing the game first time around! But playing it second time around, you can actually reach them a couple levels above your main party! I picked level 8 RSF-81 in the minetunnels with my level 5-6 party! And the same is possible with "Sparkle" in Umpani camp if you go directly to them from the monestary! Also "Vi" can be reached in Arnika with the same level as your party! The T'rang Samurai at the mine-tunnels, is also possible to reach with same levels, eventhough, he demands that you must have been in contact with the T'rangs in Martens bluff before he let you hire him.
A flexible level system for the NPC's according to your party sound good!

Yes, Vi is usually around the same level as my party when I find her, because I usually go straight to Arnika from the Monastary. I still think the RPC auto-leveller is better than saying "Oh, we've just reached level 8. Time to go recruit Sparkle." It makes the whole prcess of getting the RPCs you want very linear.

I would also like this auto-leveller to work when an RPC has temporarily left your party for whatever reason. I don't mind so much that Vi wont go with me to Bayjin, but when we finally come back to get her after killing Nessie and all that, she's several levels below us, and that's a big problem.
