Look at Rend's last post, he details why there isn't a practical way to do that.

Sending the beta to mature, responsible reviewers who understand that they are playing a beta isn't the same as releasing a beta as a demo.

Trust me on this, I hate it when my company deploys a new build of our web app. All the memos in the world explaining which features have been removed, disabled, improved or added will not stop everyone and their sister from calling me and asking me how, why or if!

Every time it happens I ending missing lunch and putting in 2 hours of overtime, every day, for a week! This from people who have already been instructed about the changes. I can't imagine what would happen if we unleashed it on the public!

I don't blame Bethesda Softworks for being reluctant to release the beta as a demo. Every wannabe reviewer on the internet would be screaming about how terrible Morrowind is without mentioning that they were playing a beta.

I didn't mean that the beta should be a demo.
What I ment was that since they apparently can send a portion of a (beta) game (that's assuming the press didn't got the entire build but a certain percentage of it) to people why is that so hard to do with a demo once morrowind is just about done?

Gothic did it and everyone loved the demo so why can't Morrowind do it?
They don't have to make a NEW game with NEW things - just a little bit of the actual game.

Again, let me add that I am NOT a game developer and that I might see it too simplistic. Personally I don't have to have a demo - I'll settle for the entire game in may

I agree with you, the game in May would be very nice.

To be fair to Morrowind makers, i do respect their hard work for doing this game, and i do wait it to be released, and i do know that it's going to be something totally great. But i do wanted to see a demo of it, so did many others too And this demo issue is not going to spoil the game itself, it's just a thing that most of us really wanted to see But i can wait for those reviews from actual game and i believe they have put their best to this game. Damn its still 2 months untill...you know

As a software engineer myself and having read alot about how Morrowind is designed I gotta say that you see it as too simplistic. For alot of reasons it would be easier to create a new world for a demo than cut off a piece of the existing game world. This is possible but

1. They won't have time to do this until the game is complete. And if they don't start on it till May by the time it was created and tested it would probably be too late to affect game sales any, which is the whole point of the demo.

2. If they just created at new world to be release as a demo they would have to code in alot of protection in their engine to prevent the demo from loading up anything other than the demo world as well as the need to make it hard for pirates to hack the demo engine to run user made mods.

Outsourcing.

"Here's what we want in the demo. Here's the construction kit. Do it."

It's going to be pirated no matter what they do.

Heh I like the outsourcing idea...

I know it will be pirated but they wouldn't want to help the pirates out by releasing a demo that can be easily hacked to play all user made mods... It would be like shooting themselves in the foot.

They could probably even get people to do it for free.

It would be really cool if they bundled a remake of Daggerfall on this engine with MW.

It's way past shooting themselves in the foot. A demo would only be slightly easier to get than the full game.

I think I read an article some where that some companies are giving up on copy protection all together, because it's just not worth it.

Press release is full content game. In order to prohibit pirating, every single copy of the game is fingerprinted for the one who signed the NDA. So if there would be pirated versions on the net, one could always tell which copy it was.

Mine isn't here, still I wonder if i get it before they go gold (rumor has it that it is only days away)

Days away from going gold???

**ears perk up**

God willing, my friend..

I can't wait until I see those magic words on a newsworthy site (such as morrowinddot! :8 )..."Morrowind Gone Gold. To be in stores within days!"

That's good for the extremely limited press copies, but not practical for the full scale release. And I wonder if that fingerprinting isn't crackable.

I remember long, long ago when i still had my Aptiva P1, i got a demo of daggerfall that came with a gaming magazine (not sure which one) but it gave you full run of the island of Betony, Probably not possible in Morrowind, but it would be cool if they would do something like that

Ahem...

Dude, calm down. Gothic had a demo because the Gothic world was about a thousandth the size of Morrowind...no exaggeration. It is NOT easy to simply slice off a chunk of the game world for a demo.
