I never played Gothic, but Morrowind's sound is one of the best I ever listened to. When you play it, you don't notice, but if you turn the music off, the game feels totally different.
Yeah, you mean, instead of reletively boring, it's positively sleep inducing?? (I'm not insulting you, I'm insulting the game.) The music itself is very good, but I personally found the lack of talking and ambient noise in Morrowind very droll. One of the first things I did was download three or four different sound Mods that added A LOT of life to the game. I think it's great though that all of those immersive ambient noise sounds are ALREADY included in both Gothics. _________________ "D'oh! I knew I should've saved sooner!" |

A simile came to mind. I would compare Gothic(s) to the first Matrix movie and MW to the second one. They are both the same genre. Tell similar stories (fantasy world hero saves the universe from evil). They use similar presentation, but... While the second one relies completely upon eye candy of computer generated presentation to woo and charm, the first one has story character and uses slight tricks of presentation to grow on you in ways one cannot quantify or enumerate.
So, Gothic did more with less.
Some people will still claim to like the Matrix sequels _________________ "You two are a regular ol' Three Musketeers." |

Hmmm, I didn't like either Matrix movie, but I definitely liked both Gothic I/II and Morrowind/w expansions . Each for different reasons. _________________ Jaz |

The mountains land-layers in Gothic 2 were blocky with lots of unnatural sharp edges. Morrowind had BY FAR the more organic nature.
The static, murky water in Gothic 2 was really badly made compared to the amazing water in Morrowind.
You must be joking. The graphic sucked in MW. The water, the water, .. I've heard that many times, but it's absolutely not realistic. The water in gothic is for me more then OK. (BTW, you have to play Gothic 2 ands swim in the ocean.)
Morrowind caves HUGE depends on how you look at it. If you take the sleepers temple as a cave, you have the largest and most beautifull cave at Gothic. The cave system at Morrowind is indeed more realistic (at least till the place I played) The mountains on the other hand were better in Gothic. It was just to round and without any sharp edges to be believable at MW. _________________ Moderator and Council Magician of the RPGDot Shadows

Preach on, brother man. I guess there are two of us who are tired of hearing about the water in MW. I ain't never seen ripples that look like that in real life. But what I HAVE seen are still, murky ponds with lilypads and algae growing in them. And hey, how insanely cool is it when you dive down in the ocean and see sun rays coming through the water!! Whooo hooooo for Gothic 2!! _________________ "D'oh! I knew I should've saved sooner!" |

The only joke is what is written above.
The water in Gothic 2 was terrible. Static, didn't reflect any light, didn't move, NOTHING. You couldn't even look down and try to see the bottom. NOT EVEN in the little ponds, and THAT is really bad.
The water in Morrowind reflected light, rippled when you walked through it, and was way clearer and better made.
Plus, when you dived into the water, your mouse DIDN'T suddenly, without any reason, become inversed, like in Gothic.
I would also like to say that the sky and weather effect in Morrowind BY FAR exceeded Gothic 2. The night sky in Morrowind was beautiful. In Gothic 2, it was just black with some huge white dots on it, and a small white moon. _________________ Like some bold seer in a trance;

BTW: I use Morrowind Sky as wallpapers! It's marvelous! Better then the true sky! |

I´m not sure about waves. The rest is definitely there.
Morrowind´s 'better' graphics are not a fact. Both games have serious weaknesses. G2 has outdated f/x while Morrowind has crappy animations.
The PC Action said G2 has the better overall graphics (85% vs. 90%, divided in 5 sub-categories). End result: both 91%.
Please note I´m not saying they´re right. This is only to illustrate one can have different opinions which game has better graphics.
If we say graphics are more or less on the same level, depending on personal taste there are two more technical categories we can discuss. Morrowind probably has more streamlined controls. Music is a matter of taste, more than every other feature. Sound & voice are clearly in G2´s favor, simply because MW has nothing to counter 9 hours of digitized speech.
So you shouldn´t be so sure MW has an advantage after the technical categories.
Gameplay cannot be compared. MW and G2 have completely different philosophies.
Is 'open ended' better than 'story-driven'?
Is 1st person better than 3rd person?
Is a complex char system preferable to a rather simple one?
How big / small a world is too big / small ?
Is a simple combat system preferable to one which requires user more interaction?
Do you want masses of bland NPCs, guilds and items or (only) a few clearly defined ones?
All this is a matter of taste. You prefer the one, I the other. _________________ Webmaster GothicDot |

Strange that noone mentions the incredible viewing distance you get from the Gothics.. That was one of the most amazing aspects of both the Gothic games for me. I remember starting Gothic (the first game) for the first time and going down that mountain when suddenly a town appears on the horizon and grows and becomes more and more detailed as you near it. I had never seen a game before where you could actually stand on a mountain top and look down at the animals grazing the valley floor below. Absolutely amazing.
Morrowind on the other hand, has a fog that stops you from seeing any more than appr. 30 meters ahead of you. Boring as hell. _________________ Swedes visit NordicGamers for the latest game reviews in swedish! |

Really? You could see the bottom in ponds and the sea? Because I'm fairly sure that you couldn't. And I KNOW that you couldn't see riples through the water in Gothic 2. The water in ponds and lakes was just as static as it was murky.
As for waves, there MAY have been a 2 part animation of sea-water, but I'm also not sure.
Anyway, in the end, I guess you're just about right about the rest of what you said. _________________ Like some bold seer in a trance;

In my personal taste, Morrowind was colorless and ugly, while G2 had a lot of different colors, and was nicer to look at. Both the sky and the water in G2 is really good. _________________
