Crossing Over?

I just started DS, and Im liking it so far. The graphics rule, and tho it seems like a bit of repetitive hack and slash as opposed to purist "Role-Playing", I find myself wanting to play it just to see more.

I like playing ranged characters most, so Ive been training my main toon as an archer, and her first sidekick as an archer too. I realized that Im going to need a tank soon, so I picked up some guy to train as a fighter. Im planning on adding one more, a magic-user as my next party member. I like making "pure" toons, all one class, even like in NWN where there are options to mix and match, Id rather just have them uber-strong in one class. Is that the way to go in DS, or should I start cross-training?

It was my experience that single discipline worked better. The only way to succesfully crosstrain is to do it one level at a time, otherwise you will end up unbalanced anyway. (If you want to be completely cross-trained you would do 1 lvl Melee, then next 1 lvl Ranged, then next 1 lvl combat OR nature mage (Don't do both or you will be unbalanced towards INT, you can catch up the other one later if you want) and then repeat each level.)

I see. As time goes on, Ive noticed it is very difficult to effectively train a "new" toon of the fighter class for example, later in the game. I have my 2 archers that have been shredding up to the point where i got the fighter initiate, and am having a real real hard time getting him trained simply because everything is getting stronger, knocking a Lv1 fighter right out! I messed around a little with a club for my archer for a little bit in the beginning, but then reconsidered and made her pure bow. If anything, the 2nd toon i got to join my party should have started fighter training and the next be my 2nd in command bowyer. Thanks!
