I have a P3, 450MHZ, 128RAM and it takes about 5mins for Gothic to load before I can start playing. Once the game loads, it runs fine (30fps) at max detail.
My question is why does this game take so long to load? Ultima 9 only takes about 30s to load and game engine was far more complex than in Gothic.
Is there anyway to get this game to load faster? I am running win2k pro. |

There are much open space in Gothic. You need more RAM. I have 512 Mb and it load about 7 - 10 sec. The next (or previos) thing you need is quick hard drive. ATA-100 7200 is the best thing.
But i think if you up your RAM to 256, it will enough. |

Game load 20s on my PC.
I have better computer then you, but I think that 5 min is too much. Maybe something is wrong.
If you want to, post your specs (graphic card, harddrive...) |

Loading takes so long because the complete world is stored in RAM. I tested it with 128, 256 and 512MB on my TB850. IMO it was unplayable with 128MB. 256MB was considerably faster, 512MB gave only a small boost.
And I doubt the game engine in U9 is more complex. |

i have 256 pc133 ram, game loads in 20 seconds or less. ram isnt that expensive, if the load times are really bugging you it shouldnt be too huge of a deal to pick up a stick of 128 and slide it in (unless you dont have an open slot) |

Are you saying the there is such a performance difference b/w 128 and 256 RAM?
Why should this be so when I have 3GIGS of hard drive space free? |

Because a HDD´s access speed is measured in ms and RAM in ns! The transfer speed of harddiscs is something like 20 MB/s while RAM can transfer up to a GB/s, depending on your system. Exact numbers are unimportant here, only the dimensions count.
In short words this means: You access your harddrive, you lose!

128 MB of RAM is not really enough for most new games.
Upgrade to 256... (But if you are planning to make complete upgrade in not too far future maybe you should wait).
It is also true, that W2000 use far more RAM then W98, so you really need this upgrade.
(I do not say, that W2000 is bad system, but if you do not tweek it, it is "RAMeater").
Do this upgrade, Gothic is really good game .
I really believe, that installing W98 will also help alot, but I do not want to start discusion abaut systems )).

Nice configuration and nice speed of loading .
Mine Gothic is little bit slower (or maybe my PC is little bit slower (or maybe I am a little bit slower)) |

It's not a problem with your box.
It's the game, how it was designed. I'm not saying it's bad, just different.
For example, Ultima 9 loads the last saved game upon starting the game. From when I click on the game shortcut to when the game is ready to play, it takes about 4 seconds. |

256 ram:
Your desktop is just enough to fit papers from all your current jobs.
128mb ram:
Your desktop is to small.
You have half of your work stacked on the floor, and if you want to work with something that is currently located on the floor you must remove stuff from your desktop first. The time it takes to just re-organize what you have on your desktop and what you have on the floor takes up more time than you actually work on your projects.
64mb ram:
You have no desktop.
You sit on the floor, working with papers. 25% of the important papers are stacked on the other side of the room, and 50% of the important papers are in the storage room on another floor.

It works theoretically, but not practically to run Win2k with 128mb ram. For once, I tend to agree, that if you have 128mb you should use Windows 98 to save memory.
I would rather pay 20$ and plug in a extra 128mb than reinstall my entire OS thou.

Its a problem with the system alright. 128mb is not enough with a Win2k system.
Even if Gothic loads differently, it doesnt take more than 30 seconds to load a game.
