Have I messed up bad style?

****Possible Tryton spoilers*****

I've just gone over the bridge you repair with the vines to kill the rat breeders (though can't seem to find them). There was a Rat guy who kept asking me what I was looking for. So I killed him, and his boss inside (tough fight, but my thief killed him outright - eventually), and found the orb thing (astral wotnot)! A bit early methinks. Have I messed up big-style? i.e. Is killing these guys gonna make me miss a whole lot of sub-quests later on? If so I'll reload an earlier game - don't wanna miss TOO much....
