Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion - Preview @ Wired

Wired has today's first preview of Oblivion on one of their hosted blogs. The style is casual and somewhat disorganised, so take this one as you will. It's also been fairly controversial:
When I got outside, things got hairy. I could see across to the other side of a lake, but it was completely undetailed. Just big, formless blobs of blues and greens. I turned around and looked at my more immediate surroundings and realized that the draw distance was awful. As you walk around, the ground teems with individually rendered blades of grass, bushes, mushrooms, all sorts of stuff. But only a small radius around your character is fully realized -- the rest of it is drawn in, quite visibly, as you move around.
Some will see this as "honest" but it's probably worth noting few - if any - other previews made similar observations.

There is a storm over the net about this currently going on, I sent a PM to Kalia I wasnt sure who woke up first you or her.

The author's site was hit first with the abuse, he has a link to his forum.

GeorgeB from 3DRealms has chimed in on Shack as he does from time to time.

It is mostly the XBox kiddies, upset, but there have been 2 other reviews which have pointed out the same problem.

Seems mostly the smaller review site have tried to mention this while the bigger site have tried to skip over it.

I am just glad I use a PC, the signs have pointed to the delay of the game being the XBox as many of us have believed.

The moron should get a PC, where he can adjust the draw distance. Problem solved, simple as that. IMO RPGs - and especially one of such magnitude as Oblivion - were never meant to be played on consoles.

I guess your opinion is not held in high regard by Bethesda then.

Truth be told, I'm not too happy about Bethesda also developing the game for the 'box (which prolly accounts for the delay of the game, too), but as long as it does not affect the overall experience on the PC, I don't give a darn.

I have an inherent loathing toward consoles, as they seem to have thrown PC game development into a disarray.

I can assure you that the reason for the delay wasn't the Xbox 360. Not at all.

Really, can you elaborate?
If you are under some NDA (most of which I think were lifted friday) could you try to speak in generalisations?
Accurate information seems more inportant to the PC crowd, afaik.

Thanks.

Yeah, I'm pretty curious about your comment too.
As for me, I wouldn't touch an XBox with a 10 feet pole. Consoles mean pretty much dumbing down games. Both in graphics and in intellectual value, in my opinion. But that's just my opinion, please don't hit me.
