Main Story Dead in its tracks

After I solve the anonymous writer quest, I go back and report to whatshis name in the Throne Room, and he tells me to talk to Barenziah for one last quest. Trouble is, she has no more quests for me. I've tried every conversation option and nothing new gets added to my journal. So what has gone wrong?

Also, how do I avenge the old King's death?
