If you go from Gothic to Icewind Dale expecting some sort of RPG you'll be heartbroken. IWD is a dungeon hack. You don't interact with others so much as find creative ways to hack them to bits. Story elements are tossed in.

Better of playing BG2 or (especially) Planescape: Torment if you want a story heavy environment.

Icewind Dale was IMHO the weakest of the IE games. Mostly because the story was way too linear but I still think it was rather good.

I don't really think IWD2 will be a spectacular game but less will also suffice. I'm definitely going to get this one.

Icewind Dale 2 using the 3ed DnD rules is more than enough for me to try it out. Actually, in some instances I prefer IWD out of ANY of the infinity games because its a tight dungeon crawl. I like that!

etc

they sure picked a bad time to put it out though. it cannot hope to compete against games like morrowind, dungeon siege, neverwinter nights. i would have made an add on for the ps2 game dark alliance as black isle if i were them and released another pc rpg in september or so, or cut the expenses on iwd2 in half and released it at 20-25 bucks (this has worked great for serious sam developers). they would have done a lot better. but then if interplay knew how to maximize revenue, they would be making more revenue, and we would have fallout 3 by now.

To me, Icewind Dale should not be considered a role-playing. When did hack and slash fall under RPG. Icewind Dale did not have a story or plot, just hack and slash. I guess Serious Sam is RPG then. I grew bored with Icewind Dale very quickly so I will not buy the second installment

Max I can not agree.
I am FPS player (or maybe better to say "I was"). And IceWind Dale had huge, perfect story in comparation to them.
IceWind Dale is RPG. There are many types of RPG games. I think that also Diablo I and II was RPG. Very action based RPG, but still RPG. This is my opinion .
