good solution to balancing soloing and grouping

I have a good idea on how to make mmorpgs equally good for people who are soloing and people who are grouping without having to make content solo or group based.

The idea I have is to allow you to recruit or create npcs to group with which will be at your level. They would have an AI that will put them in their roles and that can be modified by the player or players to what they want the npc to do in different situations. The npc companions would also take their fair share of the loot that is found and can also be traded with incase they may have got something that you might want. They would go by monetary value of the loot and by what items would be useful to their character.

This shouldn't be too hard to do since the AI shouldn't be hard to do and you can already have pets in mmorpgs and would also be easier then putting solo content in the game.

Not a bad idea. However I can see problems with lag caused by alot of people using this. I have never been a fan of being forced into groups, and there should always be resources put on solo players too.

From what I recall of the Guild Wars beta, Guild Wars has this feature already.

Guild Wars is played that way. You can play solo using NPC's you select for your group. Or in the city propers you can recruit others to join you as well as join guilds. You can have a mixed party of a few others and the rest NPC's.
