Ugh well I just abotu had it with this game. That note on the gonegold website you linked to says it nicely... It's an abusive relationship with this game... I am wondering now if I should return it or not: the fear is that since it is ported to XBOX will it be possible they will release a patch to fix this mess?

Here's some notes I wrote down about some glaring problems which the gonegold website didn't mention (note Ive been playing this game for about 25-30 horus already):

1. Trying to board a ship and take it over is near impossible! Now isntead of fighting a captain for the ship, you have to fight several NPCs at once. The manual states the number of men in the fight is proportional to the numbers of the crew. Well that couldn't be more wrong in the game... For example, I boarded a Pinncas which had only 30 sailors on it. I had 120 sailors on my ship. This would be a piece of cake victory in Sea Dogs, and rightly so, that's a HUGe advantage! But the fight loads and here I have 4 of my guys vs. 4 of theirs. 4 on 4? Wouldn't that indicate we're evenly matched? Hmm something fishy.. Well we fight and I win losing 2 of my guys. So it's me and one guy who survived to take all the booty and plunder the ship right? Wrong! Now another screen loads which is supposed to be another deck of fighting, and here is 4 of their guys firse me and my surviving comrade! WTF! Now it seems they had the numebrs advantage! Needless to say I lost miserably. Impossible to fight multiple opponents in thsi game (sure you can block em all day but as soon as you try to take a swing you quickly get cut in half)

2. Your NPC buddies always getting in your way! When you hire officers, they can accompany you on land adventures... Unfortunately, the tend to block you in tight passages and hallways since you cannot walk through them. You have to spend an hour pushing them at a snail's pace.

3. Few NPC models! You will quickly have officers who look exactly alike, since there's so few NPC models. This is not too big of a deal, if it werent for battles while boarding ships and the enemy models are the SAME exact model as your companions! Ack!

4. NPCs sometimes dont come inside houses. you might get called upon to assassinate someone during the game. So you figure, hey I just hired some good 'ol bodyguards to fight with me on land so let's go kill this guy. Unfortunately when you enter the house, you go in alone! In one occasion, the guy I was supposed to kill had 3 guards inside. Meanwhile my officers are sitting outside!

5. Often you will be sailing on the overland 3d map (where you sail between isalnds) and you will sail into a storm or battle and when it loads you're all by yourself sailing on nice calm seas. No storm, no enemy ships... what happened?

6. Jsut got this bug... I was asked to deliver cargo to a merchant on another island. I agree, see the cargo in my ship and sail over. No encounters during the short trip and I walk tot he target merchant. I naviagte to the usual dialogue where I tell him I have goods to delvier (been doing this countless times already) but the option is gone! I can't deliver the good to him because his dialogue is screwed up and won't show me the option!

Well now I'm left to hope two things: Either Akella releases a huge patch to make this game actually enjoyable and not some stress fest, or hope Firaxis does a good job with the long voerdue sequel to the great original: Pirates! But seeing how they mutilated Civilization I may have too high hope.

2.

I just posted the gone gold article as a newsbit and then subsequently noticed this thread. I had high hopes for PotC but they're slowly subsiding...

my only hope is to see Bethesda/Akella continue the development of Sea Dogs 2 for PC, with Pirates Of The Caribbean a dumbed down game inspired from Sea Dogs and aimed at console gamers.

damn, i would be happy with only Sea Dogs 1 using the Storm2 engine...

Do you guys think the game was rushed in order to follow closely with the release of the movie?

It seem the game still need more fine-tuning, and this rather clear from that they didn't adopt suitable interfaces for different gaming platform. It could be sloppy works, but i doubt it. Or maybe Bethesda/Akella just don't care?. Still, i think this game already pretty long in development. It was rumored (at least) to be released at the end of last year, and i even registered my forum account at Bethesda's Sea Dogs 2 webpages, before the forums been pull down later.

I don't care about the movie, or because it's about pirates, but i do interested in a good game.

I wonder what would happen if the movie bombed at Box Office.

Dumbing down the game to fit the movie and rushong it out the door is one possibility.
But there is also another one. Maybe Bethesda saw that Akellas´ game wouldn´t meet their quality standards. Instead it would need another year in development to become a good RPG without any chance to reach the top in this genre. Then taking Disney´s money sounds like a good idea to me if Bethesda wants to get out of this without financial loss.

rushed ? mm no i don't think.. after all this game is pretty good, very stable, an honest piece of work. the only problem i see it's this game is aimed to console market..and only console.

all features wich we feel are missing, are just useless on a console type game..

definitely, Pirates of The Caribean is a dumbed down Sea Dogs to suit console gaming, nothing more, nothing less.

if only we could use the storm 2 engine with Sea Dogs 1 files...

Yeah the storm 2 engine with sea dogs 1 gameplay would be perfect. Well also include the new ship designs, the fast travel features, and the expanded trade commodities It is just so frustrating- being involved in such great sea battles and maneuvers, and when you try to board a ship it's suddenly a nightmare. Wether you have officers with high melee rating and great equipment or have the default crewmembers, they seem to always get slaughtered quickly. It turns out like this everytime: Boarding screen loads, quickly hit Q key to fire gun while opponent draws weapon, few more slahses and he's dead. Try to run up to your ally right in front of you to help but he dies right when you get to his opponent. You finish that guy off, turn around, and now you're getting ganged by the 2 opposing sailors who defeated your other two guys. Sometimes if you're lucky, you and some allies survive this initial fight, but then are quickly killed by the guys in a similar fashion on the next deck... and since they disallow saving during this time, you gotta start alllll over from the beginning. Again, the number of guys they have on ship against your crew seems to have no correlation to actual crew sizes, as I have boarded ships with a 5 to 1 ratio in my favor only to get outnumbered on this deck fighting sequence.

Alas I just cant stop trying to play though, despite my repeated frustrations and stress. Its like having a girlfriend.

Greenford is in the island where you first start off but on the other side. I just accidentally came across it.

How many islands are there is this game do you know? Is it just the initial 7 that's on the map or are there more as the game progresses?

Well, I deleted the game off my computer. I will wait for the patch to come out before I re-install it. Me thinks there went 50 bucks down the drain

May I ask why? The game runs perfectly and I've tried it on 3 different machines.

Out of all the games released recently I feel that Pirates has the best performance w/ the best gfx out of any game and is by far the most stable.

Any problems u're having is most likely a driver issue

it seems POTC have a lot of issues with PCs using ATI brand cards.

well, i wonder if the fact that X-BOX use an nvidia card has something to do with this... since we can say that the PC version is a simple and straight port of the X-BOX code (if you look at the .c and .h files, you can even see references to X-box).

Anyway, i'll also wait for a path or add-on, not for technical pbs, but hoping for a real content and leaving all this arcade/console stuff.

for ppl who have pbs i recommend looking at this forum

http://seadogs.bethsoft.com/ubbthreads/ubbthreads.php

yes, it's the old Seadogs forum, but since Bethesda don't want to have official forums about POTC, most players who bought POTC (and most of them played Seadogs) are posting here.

Someone at GameFAQs asked Pete Hines about forums to which he said they will/would (don't know which one) do something about it. Well, the old Sead Dogs forums literally became Sea Dogs 2 forums now with all those new posts. Bethesda may as well change the forums name to Sea Dogs 2. Heck, i think it's extremely easy to add new section to the old forums & call its Sea Dogs 2 forums!. That's why someone else speculated that this got something to do with Disney (their policy). Heheh, nice....
